I finally got around to installing new urethane tires on a couple of my Shopsmith bandsaw, but just to make it fun I decided to test two brands: The Blue Max and Polytech. I'll be the first to admit that this was a totally different experience from installing stock rubber tires and I look forward to responding to your Questions, Comments & Cheapshots in the mid-week follow-up, so be sure to type something in the video comment section.

Hats off to @rdhelm who asked the simple question “When you used a brass wire wheel, was it really brass coated steel?” He went on to say that brass-plated steel wheels were all that he was able to find. Well, nowhere on the package does it say, but a quick magnet check proves that yes, it is most definitely a ferrous metal! I feel ripped off, but it did do the job just fine without damage to my bandsaw wheel.

Installing Carter "Upgrade" Blade Guides on a Shopsmith Bandsaw. Are They Worth it?

In this video we will install a set of Carter Products ball bearing blade guides on a Shopsmith bandsaw. According to their website "The Carter Shopsmith conversion kit updates your saws performance through the use of all sealed ball bearing roller guides. This provides your saw with reduced blade friction and improved cutting accuracy. The kit contains both upper and lower roller bearing side support assemblies, which work in conjunction with the existing Shopsmith thrust bearing." Really? Well, we'll be the judge of that, won't we?

Be sure to be a part of the follow-up mid-week video by posting a related Question, Comment, or Cheap-Shot in the comment field below the video.

This set was loaned to me for testing by Carter Products. This is just one of several upgrades that Carter Products has for your Shopsmith bandsaw and are available directly from them on their site: https://tinyurl.com/CarterProductsSS (This is NOT an affiliate link)

Just watched the Carter guide video, thanks for that. I have a set on order, and some blocks of wood already cut out for bandsaw boxes. Looks like installation will not be difficult.

It really was easy, once I got the part rotated on the post. I was surprised that it continued to move though, so definitely consider using Loctite or something on that connection. Scott

Here's a screenshot of the Carter ball bearing blade guides installed on the Shopsmith bandsaw. Looking forward to doing some cutting this week once I get the table shimmed.

Good show! Enjoyed the Carter upgrades! Also I found it interesting that many wire wheels sold as brass aren't. Thanks Scott!

IMPORANT NOTE: I believe that the excessive blade drift encountered in this video may have been a result of the “Stupid Bandsaw Trick” shown several videos back, where the blade on the Shopsmith bandsaw can be twisted. The amount of drift I encountered was unusual, and I’ve ordered a new blade and will test this phenomenon shortly. Scott (AKA: MyGrowthRings)
