All I want to know is, why is his bandsaw so high? Scott
Great question. I wondered that myself. Still can't come up with a plausible answer.

In this episode of STUMPED? Q&A we take a look back at the Questions, Comments, and Cheap-Shots that came from this past weekend's video titled "Upgrading the Shopsmith Quill Lever to a Quick-Release Multi-Position Lever Handle. Is It Worth it?" Watch it here: https://youtu.be/OjycnglIlBM

Geoffrey's been showing this kit on his Youtube channel and on the Shopsmith Owners Group on Facebook and in the Shopsmith Forums, and I didn't fully understand what was included in the $125 (Postage included) price, so I reached out to Geoffrey for answers. What I learned was the kit isn't just your choice of wither the single handle or the three-handle configuration as it first appeared, but rather you get:
- One 12" long lever with quick release hub,
- One 8" three-handle with quick release hub,
- Two 19- spline hub adapters that stay attached to the headstock.

LINKS to products that were used and discussed in this video (in no particular order):
- Geoffrey Baker's "Quick Release Quill Feed Handle Kit" available through him via eBay http://ebay.us/CNEwKz
- Shopsmith's Shopsmith 10-Position Quick Index Quill Feed Handle Upgrade sold by Shopsmith via Amazon: https://amzn.to/3mPpOxT
- Misc Shopsmith quill handle listings on eBay: http://ebay.us/d4w6Z6

Here's the link to Geoffrey's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp7Q...

0:00 - Intro
0:30 - Geoffrey Baker chimes-in
1:12 - Comments about the stock Shopsmith quill handle
1:46 - Is the "Baker Lever" too long?
2:26 - Where's the link!
3:42 - Support for the Shopsmith 10-position lever
4:19 - You can service the hub
4:47 - Could the shafts be different sizes?
5:34 - Straighten the bent handle
5:54 - Chopping mortises and my final opinion

This week’s a long one, but if you ever want to give hollow chisel mortising a try on your Shopsmith you are going to need all this information. We will go over a couple modern changes in chisels and bits, how to sharpen and hone them, the set-up of the entire mortising kit and then we’ll put the stock quill handle to the test by trying to mortice with a 1/2” chisel, followed by doing the same with the aftermarket Geoffrey Baker levers.

Don't forget to leave your questions, comments, and Cheap-shots below and we'll address them during our mid-week video.

0:00 - Intro
1:00 - Changes in modern chisels and bits
3:55 - Sharpening and honing the mortising chisels
8:15 - How I store my chisels and bits
8:43 - Set-up and support of the table
11:18 - Hold-down
13:33 - Setting-up the chisel holder
19:20 - Actual mortising!
21:17 - How I mortise today and important final thoughts

Due to work and family obligations, this is going to be the last new video for almost a month! Look for our regular twice-weekly schedule to return beginning Jan 17th.

In preparation for a couple lathe turning vides I thought I'd let you in on what I believe is a good step-up from the Buck Bros. chisels that most of us purchased from Shopsmith when we got our Shopsmith tools. Though I remain a devoted fan of Robert Sorby and Record tools I just can't ignore the value that two sets of HSS (High-Speed Steel) tools from PSI bring to the party.

Here are a few links to these tools, which are available on Amazon:
- Benjamin's Best (PSI Woodworking) 8pc HSS Lathe Chisel Set: https://amzn.to/3ar9MXO

- If you already have a standard set of HSS tools and are looking to step-up to tools like an Oval Skew and a Diamond Parting tool, check-out this 6 piece PSI set: https://amzn.to/34vQOeP If this set is sold out, here's a similar set from Savannah https://amzn.to/3p9ftxz

- My precious! This is the 1" Robert Sorby Skew that I love to use: https://amzn.to/3h6yazs

-Here's the 1 1/4" Robert Sorby Skew that I shared: https://amzn.to/3p8Jca5

- Here's an 8 piece Robert Sorby Turning Tool Set that seems to have inspired the PSI set: https://amzn.to/2WxBWbm

0:00 - Intro
0:19 - A Short Intermission
1:25 - Talking turning tools: Buck Bros.
4:00 - Harbor Freight "Cheap" Carbon Steel Set
5:00 - High-Speed Steel tools from Robert Sorby
6:49 - High-Speed Steel tools "Record Power"
7:57 - The "Hercules Tool No. 3" carbide tool from Hunter Tool Systems
9:16 - PSI Woodworking's "Benjamin's Best: 8pc HSS Lathe Chisel Set
14:05 - Harbor Freight's similar "Winsdor Design" 8pc HSS Lathe Chisel Set

We pick-up where we left off in December (Happy New Year!) with some must-do prep prior to using your Shopsmith tools for turning. Don't forget to post your Questions, Comments, and Cheapshots for the mid-week follow-up episode of "STUMPED?" and next week we'll cover some turning basics including scraping vs shearing.

Here's a link to our last video where we walked through the HSS lathe tools mentioned in this video: https://youtu.be/kiCI7WbG6ZA

In this episode of STUMPED? I'll answer the questions and respond to the comments from this weekend's video on safely setting-up your Shopsmith for lathe turning. If you missed that video, catch it here: https://youtu.be/w_SS67qincs

This is that crazy turning video where the guy turns a collum with Shopsmith tools: https://youtu.be/rQbzEz0-7X0 and his blog shows the finished product: http://timetofiddle.yolasite.com/turn... He is my hero.

0:00 - Intro
0:40 - A sincere thank you
1:05 - Graham is amazed that he hasn't been hurt!
1:26 - Bruce asked about my rusty tool rest post
2:07 - Wayne is gaining confidence in his Shopsmith tools! Has the tailstock eccentric cup changed?
3:05 - Chad wonders if I'm sacrificing safety for comfort?
3:51 - Ed asks if it is possible that the Lift-Assist could cause problems?
4:45 - Gary notes that the Shopsmith is a low lathe, compared to many
5:54 - Scott has added setscrews to some of his old Shopsmiths
6:33 - Jg disagrees with the purpose of the large setscrew under the tiebar
7:00 - Why I never use an extension with a fence on the left side
7:40 - This "tolerance" (play) is eliminated on the Mark VII and the Mark 7
8:50 - James finds some of Shopsmith's instructions difficult to follow
10:39 - Paul asks about the turning limits of the Shopsmith
13:30 - Franken Berry disagrees and points out EVERY error made in that crazy video linked above

We FINALLY get to play with the two HSS lathe tool sets that we purchased back in December. In this vid I dust off my old spindle turning skills and even show you how rusty I am! If you want to learn to turn be sure to check out some of the channels that focus on turning, including those posted in the comment section below. (My subscribers post the best comments!)
