That is one of the designs I had envisioned when we were commenting back and forth on the original "Jack the Stripper" video. I too was concerned about it drifting away from the fence. More so while you pulled it back before staring the next cut. Once the base of the jig was past the riving knife and anti-kick back paw; the possibility for the jig to drift away from the fence and get into the blade with the saw still running my biggest concern.

Great job, bainin.

Perhaps call it: "Son of a Jack the Stripper" or "Jack the Stripper jr."...?

With the jig used in combination with your sliding rule on the table; you could get very accurate width pieces without using a setup strip for a gauge.

The only thing I might change it the length of the saddle that rides over the fence to be the same as the base board that is on the table for cutting longer strips.

Horizontal Boring on a Shopsmith Mark V (Sorry, I don't have time to record a short video!)

A horizontal boring machines is one of those tools that few woodworker even consider, because with the exception of the Shopsmith Mark V, most other options are large and expensive dedicated tools. Any time I am drilling into the edge of a board for joinery I always go to this simple set-up.

Don't forget to leave your questions, comments, and Cheap-shots below and we'll address them during our mid-week video.

0:00 - Intro: Why you might need a surface sander
1:26 - Changing over the Mark V from sawing to horizontal boring
3:00 - Do we even need dowels?
3:35 - Locate the center of the stock
4:49 - CRITICAL TIPS!
7:15 - Using Dowel Centers
11:08 - Boring and joining end grain

I do appreciate the videos and they have helped clarify what’s in the manuals and the old videos that the quality is very good due to the transition to YouTube format. They are a welcome addition.

We've put this off long enough. Today we tackle my rusty Shopsmith 4" jointer and bring it back to life. Using the Ol' tried-and-true WD-40 and Scotch-Brite® method I'll get this down to bare metal and in our mid-week follow-up episode of "STUMPED? 3:42 - The Shopsmith jointer fence
4:31 - Removing the Feather Guard
7:35 - A discussion of rust removal options (Evapo-Rust is an excellent choice!)
9:04 - My new favorite paper towel (Yes, it's a thing!)
9:54 - Which Scotch-Brite® is best for the task?
10:19 - The rust removal begins!
13:53 - A weird solution for the "neked" iron before it rusts again

Products used or discussed in this video (in no particular order):
Here's a small assortment of Scotch-Brite® hand pads: https://amzn.to/2HxGMSc

It was a funny coincidence that both Nick and I were thinking about rust this week. Apparently what they say about "great minds" works for me and Nick too! Thanks, Chad for recommending his vid in the comments of my vid! Here's Nick's vid: https://youtu.be/ZVeY9d5Xk2Q

So much for Plan A! Not only are we suffering from a rain delay, but after filming some high-quality "Plan B" footage, I lost it! So, in this video, I answer your Questions, Comments, and Cheap-Shots from the weekend's video on "Restoring a Rusty Shopsmith Jointer". If you missed it, catch it here: https://youtu.be/-FI06EjqQPY

Also, for an excellent video on attacking and preventing rust, take a look at this recent video from Nick Engler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVeY9... And sub him while you at it! He knows more about woodworking and even Shopsmith woodworking than most people I know.

2:30 - Does paint thinner leave a residue?
3:15 - Not alone in using poly on cast iron

4:32 - How do you tension the jointer guard?
7:44 - Nick Engler did a rust video too! (See link)
8:27 - Can you use a DA sander?
8:55 - Does dark cast-iron need to be cleaned?
9:40 - What happened with the "Rust Free"?

Products used or discussed in this video (in no particular order):

Cast Iron Tool Rust Prevention with Polyurethane, Penetrol and an Important WARNING!

Post by Chad »

DON'T MISS THE WARNING AT THE END OF THE VIDEO!

Well, it took an entire week to get here, but we are finally applying a couple rust-preventative treatments on my Shopsmith jointer. Since we first talked about this I have expanded from my original pan of applying a 50/50 blend of oil-based polyurethane and mineral spirits to doing a test of that, as well as water-based poly AND an interesting product called "Penetrol". Regardless of the topcoat used I always use some form of wax as the sacrificial surface and to keep the tables slick.

In our mid-week follow-up episode of STUMPED? Q&A we'll talk more about these products and apply a couple of them.

0:00 - Intro
1:04 - Isn't the mineral spirits going to be a problem?
1:53 - But it would be a problem with H2O-Based Poly
2:04 - Have you tried Penetrol?
2:50 - Let's test them ALL!
4:13 - Applying the Poly, the H2O-Based Poly, and the Penetrol
5:05 - An IMPORTANT WARNING!

Products used or discussed in this video (in no particular order):
- Here's a small assortment of Scotch-Brite® hand pads: https://amzn.to/2HxGMSc
- WD-40 Specialist Degreaser. I forgot to mention that I like this new-ish formula that doesn't leave a residue: https://amzn.to/31GDvHa
- FLOOD Penetrol: https://amzn.to/323ePZI I wasted time traveling to two hardware stores and a home center before finding the oil-based version of Penetrol in stock, and once I found it I paid more than I would have paid on Amazon! Save yourself the hassle and just order it.
- Awesome paper towels (Perfect for shop use): https://amzn.to/3kvse3E
- Water-Based Polyurethane: https://amzn.to/382GvBK
- Oil-Based Polyurethane: https://amzn.to/323oyzb
- 100% Mineral Spirits for clean-up and thinning of the Oil-Based Poly: https://amzn.to/3eirL2C
