The Action begins around the 20:00 mark. What makes this episode of STUMPED? Q&A special? It was recorded live during our monthly Board of Directors “Board Meeting”. We not only discuss the questions, comments and cheep shots from the two proceeding videos be we also talk about a few of our “White Whales” or perhaps better said, “Unicorn Tools”. Finally, we put the Excalibur Ultra adjustable dado blade set to one more test, cutting a dado, a rabbet and a lap joint in quarter sawn white oak.

The Shopsmith 18" jigsaw was the state of the art for many years, though it was later replaced for scroll and fretwork by constant-tension scroll saws. Even so, it's a great tool for simple jigsaw work and even better it can do a few tricks that you can't do with a scroll saw. This video covers the basic setup and use of this tool and we'll get into those tricks in next weekend's video.

Early in the video Scott talks about the plastic yoke which is a common part that breaks. It, like most if not all parts for the Jig Saw are no longer available from Shopsmith. Still it is a great tool to have and I hope Scott will show why in the follow up video showing some of the things you can do with the Jig Saw that you cannot do with the Scroll Saw.

When I grow up I either want to be Adam Savage or Chris from Clickspring. Actually, I'm OK being Scott, but I would enjoy hanging out with these two guys. One thing the three of us have in common is our respect for the capabilities of a die filing machine. In this video, we'll take a look at how to use the Shopsmith 18" Jigsaw as a fine stationery file. Be sure to check back for the mid-week follow-up where we'll address using abrasives on this tool for wood "filing". As mentioned, here's a link to the Shopsmith 18" Jigsaw playlist:

So, I watched the video series from Scott on the Magna Jigsaw. I don't own a scroll saw or the Magna Jigsaw. Not really interested in scroll saw work at this point in time of my woodworking journey and I own a handheld jigsaw, but I have tremendous respect for those who create art on a scroll saw.
About the only interesting use of the Magna Jigsaw that I got out of the video series was the ability to use files in it, but then I don't do a lot metalworking so not worth me picking up one. Also, if I need to cut a 3' circle, I would much rather do it with a trammel arm on a router than to use a fixed base jigsaw, though it is interesting that you can do this on the Magna one. Am I missing something, i.e. are there any other tricks up the Magna Jigsaw sleeve? I really enjoyed learning about this tool (that is foreign to me) from Scott, but just wondering if I am too quick to discount it. Did Scott cover everything you had in mind for the Magna Jigsaw?

I watched all the jigsaw videos and didn't see anything that would get me to buy a jigsaw. In fact, I owned a new in-the-box clone that came with a Shopsmith I bought and I practically gave it away to get it out of my garage. I currently own two scroll saws. If I did not own these scroll saws, I would not buy a jigsaw to do scrolling. Like you, I think the way to cut a large circle is with a router. A router can easily and accurately cut circles of just about any size. As for metalworking, I can see some benefit in using die files, but I don't do enough metalworking to justify the cost of the storage space. Unless Scott comes up with something I really need in the next video I'm not going to be in the market for a Shopsmith jigsaw.
