Serial Number 3068 - Model 10E

Post by Mberkeland »

I have recently been given my wife’s grandpas shopsmith. In reading through a few posts to try to figure out how old it is and what parts I have and/or are missing, I noticed it may be an older serial number - 3068. It’s a model 10E. Is there a way to determine age based on the serial number?

That’s what I was starting to think after reading through this site. It runs fine. Is it easy to find parts? I am not looking to sell it, but is it something I should look to restore? I like those types of projects and plan on using it.

There are a lot of OEM parts available on e-bay etc.

Worth it? Does the bear potty in the woods? Does a chicken have teeth? Is the sky blue(sometimes)?

Ha! I don’t know much about these, other than what I have read today online. I’m just excited to try to turn something.

Thanks for your input. I will see what parts/attachments I have and figure out what I may need.

Below is a link to a thread I started on the Shopsmith Model 10's. If you have not seen it yet you may enjoy reading it. It is titled Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23647

As JPG said Your Shopsmith Model 10E is an early one and likely made by the end of 1947 or the very beginning of 1948. We know that because the original serial numbers started with 1001 and the first 250 Model 10E Shopsmith tools were shipped out in November 1947 to the West Coast Montgomery Ward Stores.

The link below is to Everett's Google Drive where many restored documents can be found including the original Shopsmith Model 10E Owner's Guide. This can also be found under Maintenance and Repair as one of the first threads titled Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... XBhMHJJY1E

Your Model 10E will be slightly different from the first ones described in the original manual. The 10E Owner's Guide on the top row is closest to your 10E. There were many changes to the Model 10's during their production. Some parts remained the same throughout the entire production time while others had several versions from 2 to 7. The good news is changes made to the Model 10's can fit the earlier versions. Some can be replaced as individual parts while others must be replaced as assemblies. The picture below is one of my oldest Model 10E's and is S/N 1077 which shows what came with them when originally purchased except the 1/2" Arbor, 1/8" and 3/16" Allen Wrenches are not shown and they did not come with a bench.

This is all extremely helpful and appreciated. I can’t wait to get to work learning more about this. I took some pics of what came with it. Some pieces are broken. I know my wife’s grandpa used it a lot and had a great workshop in his garage. I’m glad to add this and start building mine.

I know he did metal work as well as wood work. He built some cool furniture out of old local boat docks that were wrapped in steel.

From what I can tell, I have most of the parts, although a couple are broken. I’m going to see if a metal guy I know can repair them, or I will just keep an eye on eBay.
