Went shopping today
A local guy advertised to sell rough cut walnut lumber so I bit the bullet and bought some from him. I picked out about 80 bd ft until I ran out of cash.
Almost all of the boards are 9-12" wide. I'll be busy planing it all once the weather warms up a bit.

Not as good a price as I would like, but still better than anywhere else in this part of the country that has no trees. Any good hardwood has to be imported here from Minnesota, Wisconsin, or states farther east. If you want to make the trip yourself and have a truck and trailer, you can buy your own at the eastern sawmills. If not, you find someone else locally who is doing the "importing" and buy from them. That raises price, but not as bad as having to buy retail.
My theory is that if I don't have a stash of hardwood in my garage, then I no longer need my Shopsmith and my other tools. A saw without wood is useless.

Garys,
I know exactly what you mean.
I need to take a truck and make a trip out of state for a few days.

If you take that trip, talk to all your woodworker friends before you go. They might want some hardwood too and you can pick up some extra and sell them some to cut your costs of the trip.

Ive even toyed with the idea of maybe making a business out of it.
In my spare time of course.

Theres a guy in my neighborhood with 150 bft of old barn pine-looks nice. Its 4"+ x 1"+ by various lengths...I am so tempted due to the price of wood right now...but my wallet seems to be missing the $150 he wants for it.

I find it some what interesting that in our part of the country ya can't get good knotty ponderosa pine, Douglas fur is very very expensive.

There are a number of hard wood sellers in Salt Lake. The only one I have ever gone to is McBeth Hard Woods. We have a custom wood shop here in Ogden about 6 miles away. That is where I buy my hard wood.. He keeps the common species in stock in various rough thicknesses. I don't know how his prices compare to say a McBeth's but in the small quantities I buy it is not worth the 70 mile round trip to Salt Lake to save a few pennies if that were the case.
