Nature videos this time Herons getting ready to nest

I went out looking to see how the little owl(s) were doing. The nest now has Herons in it so not sure what happened but not looking good for the owls. We did have a late cold snap, some really windy days too, any of which could have caused problems. No sign of the mom or dad either so if the chick was out and on the ground I would have expected one of them to be close by......
So since I was there and so were the Herons I shot some videos of them. Six videos in all and if you are into nature watch them all, if not then even one or two might be nice for you. Hate Herons then best stay away. As I like to do they are all short, like 30 seconds or so each.

Maybe the nest didn't originally belong to the owls? I think owls borrow/take nests from other birds (herons being one of them). I found this article that mentions that at least:

The owls have their pick of nests as the herons are still down south soaking up the sun while the owls are laying egg(s) and having them hatch. As an example here is a video from last year, April 2 so pretty close to a year ago and the fluffy chick on the nest. This is what I was hoping to see again this year.

About a week later it was out of the nest but did return to the nest a bit later. When they are out of the nest it seems the a parent is often quite near by.

BTW the nest site from last year isn't there anymore. Don't know if nest went down or whole tree when down but no sign of it.

One of my family members didn't know that herons nested in trees, he thought they would nest on the ground and was shocked to see them in nature doing their thing. For a long while we didn't see them around here nesting and now I know of several places they have decided to take over. In fact many many years ago we use to go to a rookery where you had to schedule admissions and walk in for about a half mile to see them. It was a gated former quarry turned wildlife sanctuary and only had trips in once a week.
So here is something for you students of nature. Look at this tree and tell us what you see:

Is it:
a) A tree that has been attack by cicada in particular ones from brood 14.
b) A tree that is survived sharp sheet ice from last winter.
c) A tree that was attach by a rare tree climbing beaver.
d) A image of a tree that has been altered to make you think something has happen when it hasn't
e) A porcupine stopped by for lunch.
f) I have no idea.

Something ate it, my guess since it is the only likely choice is E porcupines.

Growing up in northern WI I saw a lot of this. I've lived in IL a lot of years now and not once have I seen this until the other day. No sign of the animal and believe me I searched the area hoping to find it but no luck.
In northern WI it wasn't at all uncommon to see the animal up in the tree eating or resting and of course a lot of dead ones along the road ways. They are not know for their speed and I don't think they ever learned about crossing a road and looking both ways........ I mentioned this to my brother who lives up north and he said you don't see them much anymore. Since they were(are?) protected and since most were not on anyone's meal plan one has to wonder what happened to them??? I guess life goes on one way or another.
So while the correct answer could have been "f" it also could have been "e". I'd love to film one someday but that seems pretty unlikely.
BTW I also saw my first turtle of spring on the same day. Looking forward to more adventures in nature. Hope to get out at least twice this coming week, only have to work around elections on the 6th and my wife's second shot on 8th.
