New Shopsmith Product Announced

Post by reible »

RLL Industries announces a new product today, April 2021. It is a throwback version of their multipurpose woodworking machine from the 1940's. It features 10 exclusive features and will be called the 10EX.

It is based on new aluminum and magnesium castings to reduce the weight yet retain the ruggedness and robust feature set. To keep the cost competitive it will come with easy to replace plastic way tubes or optional EMT tubes. The headstock molds were found stored in a garage on a vacant lot in downtown Burbank CA. Yes they are the same ones used to prototype the original Shopsmith 10ER and other then a mouse nest they were in near perfect condition.

The 10 tools are:
1) A 12" table saw. Dept of cut of about 2-1/2" is possible. The table size of 12" by 12" is perfect for small projects. We have also eliminated the tilting table by making it a fixed table. No more complaints right? In today's shop you make do with what you have.
2) A 18" capacity lathe a first class system for bowls. Yes we have taken the ability to turn anything but bowls on the system but it has all the features you expect from Shopsmith.
3) A vertical drill press with a 1/4" drill chuck for those small holes we all struggle with.
4) A horizontal drill press, we never understood why woodworkers wanted this and we don't even know what it is but marketing said you would like it so there it is.
5) A vertical router, yes now you can compete with those $20 Harbor Freight routers right on your shopsmith. Yes we heard that our router was to slow so how does the 50000 sound?
6) A horizontal router, again the marketing people said you want this feature and again we have no idea how or what it is.
7) A powerful vacuum system, we just can't say too much about this. No really we can't, we still are working out the details, but you will love it.
8) A panel saw, based on the good old days when the 10ER could be used this way. You have to love the danger this brings back to woodworking.
9) 12" fan, yes this thing is blowing into the wind. Warning don't spit into the wind or catch superman's cape in the unprotected blades. It can be used to unmask superheros but don't do that.
10) A 50,000 RPM pad buffer. We ask the engineer just how fast the new motor could go before it would blow up, and yes it was 50,000 RPM! We are going to let you test that out.

It will be powered by a 3 horsepower DC motor with variable speed control from 10 R.P.M. to 50,000 R.P.M. It will have a lock out feature limiting the rotational speed to just 15 R.P.M. if the pass code has not been entered. This is useful in cases were children have access to the machine or in case it is stolen. For remote operations a battery holder for 48 Dewalt 20 Max batteries (batteries are not included) is an option.

A new feature will be the adjust-a-height base included with fast height settings of 25" to 48" for the shortest and tallest woodworkers.

A fully loaded system is expected to weigh just 110 pounds. It is mounted on an air pallet for easy movement and has screw in mounting bolts to keep it in a fixed location along with an optional 350 pound granite slab for those that want the "Anchor".

We are really excited about the vertical panel saw said Dave. You will be able to cut panels of plywood up to 50" tall with the system and it is a whole lot easier then trying to do it on the table saw. It is also very scary so it doubles as a thriller game. We also proved some 6 foot long panel pushers which should almost get you out of harms way most of the time.

Adding a vacuum system with variable intake makes clean up a breeze. I comes standard with 6" hoses but you can go all the way to 10" for those really big jobs. It is also water proof so it will work for irrigation or for flooded basements. We also have the optional vacuum hold down where the machine is suctioned to the floor by the vacuum.

For those hot summer days there is nothing like the 12" fan to provide a cool breeze where ever you want it. We have seen it used to power smaller windmills and can be used to dry grain.

The pad buffer can be used at lower speeds to get a polished finish or turn it up and give your project nice burnt finish. While it looks like sanding pads would fit the buffer wheel we do not recommend that combination for armature finishers. It is also great for disposing of large left over piles, it can easily sand away even the largest pile of wood, see our special stock of 10 grit sandpaper. You will appreciate the the new vacuum system when you are finished.

A few attachments are in the works. A hydraulic tube bender will be a first of any woodworking tool. It will also almost allow you to repair bent EMT tubes as an example of being able to keep this tool running for a year or two months. A conversion kit to make the whole system into a riding lawn more has been promoted but trying to get the air pallet and the suction to the floor feature to work together has had some problems. The most exciting news is the upcoming Mars edition, designed to work on Mars. If we are going to live there then there will have to be homes and DIY's are bound to follow. Getting a head start on having a shopsmith on Mars is an exciting thing to think about.

As an introductory offer you can order your 10EX today and today only. Delivery will be tomorrow, we promise. If you are one of the first 10 to order we will upgrade your 10EX for free to the 10MARS when it is ready in 2173. Just come to the factory and get your upgrade kit, offer exclusive to original 10EX owners only.

:) Good one. What is scary is that half those features listed appeal to me. Too bad it runs on DeWalt batteries since I have chosen to be on the Milwaukee platform. This and the fact that it doesn't have an anti-grav base unfortunately make it a deal breaker for me. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait for the Mark C (100).

Sure, sounds good, but when's the delivery data? I've been waiting for 40 years for that nuclear battery I ordered. That's odd, it's exactly 40 years to the day. Oh well, just another random coincidence.
