A little help here ID animal?

Post by reible »

A little help here.

Just got the trail camera set out again and along with the cats, squirrels and birds we had a racoon visit.

It is clear this visitor #1 is a racoon.

But a while later this came through, is it a racoon too or something else?

I like the audio in this one too. Birds start singing way before it gets light out.

Anyway, let me know what you thing visitor #2 is.

I slowed the video down to 1/4 speed and see both a mask and one ring on what looks like very short tail. I'd say raccoon that lost part of its tail.

It definitely is not a jackalope. At least not any ordinary jackalope.

Set the camera up again last night and visitor #2 came back for a visit. This video makes it quite clear what it is. I'll let you watch so you can find out for yourself.

Then this morning shows the return of the Chipmunk after a long winters nap. I've been waiting to see one and it looks like today is the day. Watch to the end to see a squirrel chase the chipmunk..........

BTW my wife found this:

"Why do some raccoons have short tails?
Apparently some raccoons, especially when they're still young and with their littermates, carry the tussling for dominance to a point of injury. Because the pursued individual is likely trying to get away from the biter, the hindquarters and tail often receive the brunt of the damage."

Don't know if this is the case for this one but it could be.

Looks like the short tail racoon is applying for the frequent visitors award.

Racoon shows up again, I know boring but then the second video is a really funny chase scene of a squirrel chasing a rabbit........ grand prix style in the back yard. Skip the first if you want but the second is really something that you just don't see unless you are very lucky or have a game camera setup.

The second video reminds me of rabbit that frequented my yard a few years ago. It used to wait until the dog (mini-dachshund mix) was within 10 feet of it before running. It would do laps around the yard just in front of the dog. If the rabbit got to far ahead it would stop and wait for the dog to catch up. If the dog would loose interest it would draw the dog's attention and start running again. Once it decided that they had both had their exercise for the moment it would leave the yard by going through the fence. A few hours later it would be back sitting out in the middle of the yard looking at the back door for the dog.
