What do I have here?

Post by Schrump »

Just found this at a garage sale. From
What I can tell it’s an early model. Is there a serial number list for older machines. Reads 1460B.

There is a knowledge base for Model 10's here for sure. This is a good starter thread for some light reading: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23647 The Model 10 guys here will offer a ton of help, first thing they'll want you to do is post more pics of everything you got as there is a lot of variation. And with stuff this old, there are usually missing parts.

Welcome to the forum. That is the original Shopsmith. It should be a Model 10E or it may have been upgraded to a 10ER. The serial numbers did not have a letter at the end. Your serial number should be 14608. That would put it built in 1949. I blew up your picture and it does kind of look like a B. I think it must just be the dirt as there were no Model 10 serial numbers ending with a letter.

As David said, more pictures please.

Schrump,

Let me add my Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. As you are already seeing there is a lot of information available here. David has given you a link to the thread I started sometime back called Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where. There is a lot of information to be found in it including some history so I hope you enjoy reading it. It may answer many questions you have about the Shopsmith Model 10's. As John said and I agree that the serial number is probably 14608 and not 1460B. I have not seen any serial number that ends in a letter. Since the serial number does not have a prefix letter it should have been made in the Western Plant and likely in 1948. There is no serial number list of dates tools were made to go by so most is best guesses. There are very few known dates that go with serial numbers. The first being serial numbers 1001 to 1250 which were the first Model 10E's made and shipped from the factory November 15, 1947. Some Shopsmith histories found around the web have that as October not November but company documents have it as November. Another specific date vs. serial numbers is April 1951 for the Western Plant which was at serial number R53198 and the Eastern Plant which was at ER40908 changing from double wedge locks on the headstock and carriage to single wedge locks.

Pictures do help in identifying parts and if there have been upgrades/changes to any particular Model 10. For example, early Model 10E's with the wood extension table may have been upgraded to the metal extension table and related parts. There was an upgrade kit sold to do just that. Sometimes they come with both the original wood and metal upgrade tables. Over the years replaced missing or broken parts may be different versions than what originally came with a particular Shopsmith Model 10E or 10ER.

I don't want to assume that you already bought it and you didn't specifically say but if you did we are here to help. If you are thinking about it we are still here to help with that too. Ask questions, add pictures where you can to go with questions and if you did buy it I hope you enjoy your new-to-you tool. We can help with that too. :)

If you can get a picture of the serial number with it cleaned off first that would help end the speculation of is it 14608 or 1460B

It certainly does look like a “B”.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the serial-number scheme was changed. I assume that the numbers were punched with manual letter stamps. So the worker doing the stamping could have grabbed the wrong one. But my suspicion is that his or her “8” punch was missing or damaged. In which case the “B” punch could have been used as a temporary workaround.

I agree it "looks" like a B. That is what I said when I blew it up. I still want to see it with the crud removed. Nobody we know of has ever seen a Model 10 with a letter suffix on the serial number so a picture of the plate cleaned will settle it for sure. I still thing the dirt is hiding the rounded edges on the left side of the 8.

I blew up your picture more because it is more in focus than the OP's. If you look, the "straight" line on the left that makes it look like a B extends above and below the character. Considerably past on the bottom. Looks like dirt to me. Only the OP can tell us for sure.
