Brand new Stanley bench plane 4 1/2 (1-12-045) tune up required beyond what the user manual describes. In the first video on this plane I demonstrate the steps for setting up the plane as described in the user manual.

Taylor Toolworks Replacement Plane Blade: Answer to Stanley Blade Problems?

Will the TayTools replacement blade be the answer? I've lost faith that the stock Stanely blade will ever shape up no matter how much lapping I do. Before I give up on this plane completely, I give the inexpensive blade from Taylor Toolworks a try.

This is the third in a series of video regarding setting up this plane.

Steel Spring Hold Downs: Made Obsolete By Plastic Feather Boards?

Plastic feather boards hit the woodworking scene 40 years ago. Prior to that woodworkers used home made wood finger boards or steel spring type hold downs which were patented in the early 1930's by Delta.

The modern plastic feather boards are fantastic, but on my aluminum table saw, support a limited range of board sizes. The old hold downs are fascinating and support a wide variety of board sizes. But is this old tech still useful?

Many woodworkers consider Shopsmith's stock push blocks the best ever made. Mine are in serious need of TLC to restore them back to safe usable condition.

The Worx AI Drill have been disappointing as a woodworking tool. I explain why and demonstrate what may be the perfect alternative.

Woodworking Table Saw Blades: Thin Kerf Better for Heavy Rips?

My Shopsmith table saw has a 1 and 1/8 HP motor. Many woodworking resources recommend full kerf blades for table saws rated at 3 or more horsepower and thin kerf blades for table saws rated less than 3 horsepower. So, I was lead to believe that thin kerf blades would work best. But in practice, I could not detect any performance difference other than the thin kerf blades left behind more saw marks. In this video I attempt to quantify the performance difference between a 24 tooth thin kerf ripping blade with a 50 tooth full kerf combination blade.

My first video investigating kerf size dealt with wood loss and cut quality. - https://youtu.be/NNwjy5OVDKA

What Does the Dial do on the Front of the Shopsmith Mark V?

Post by Chad »

woodshop nerdery

A Shopsmith Mark V is a multi-functional tool supporting a wide range of woodworking operations including table saw, lathe, disc sander, belt sander, drum sander, jointer, thickness planer, plate joiner, drill press, shaper, router, and many others.

One of the secrets to making all these tools operate successfully from a single motor has to do with the signature dial on the front of the Shopsmith Mark V.

Shopsmith, even the original 10er model, was not the first multi-purpose woodworking system. But, the innovations introduced in the early Shopsmith models changed these tools in a major way.

How Hot Does My Shopsmith Headstock Run?

Post by Chad »

woodshop nerdery

I run my Shopsmith in Overhead routing mode for about 45 minutes at high speed. I use an infrared thermometer to measure to the operating temperature. How hot did it get.
