After years of hunting for a Shopsmith Thickness Planer for a reasonable price, I finally found one. But it was in need of some TLC in order to bring it back to working order.

I walk you through some of the critical repairs and maintenance needed, including setting the blade height. I show the very first test run on a scrap maple board. See this great addition to the Woodshop Nerdery power back to life.

My woodworking hobby is probably better off if I had just stuck with the old and worn full kerf blades that came with my used Shopsmith table saw.

Flatten Warped Wood: Salvaging Twisted Clamping Cauls

The wooden cauls on some of my four-way panel clamps have warped and twisted making them difficult to use. I have fallen in love with these Shopsmith Double Bar Clamps, for clamping up large panels or plywood scraps for my woodworking projects. Can I un-twist these boards and make them more usable?

I use a table saw hack to cut a panel with uneven edges.

During the course of making woodworking projects in my garage workshop, from time to time I encounter large oddly shaped panels. Since these panels can't be squared using the table saw fence or reasonably sized table saw sled, I experiment with a technique involving a simple edge guide.

I can't claim credit for inventing this method. You can read more about it in the eBook "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" at the following link. Look for the section "Sawing Stock with Irregular Edges" and Figure 2-50.

Drilling pocket holes on my Shopsmith in horizontal drilling machine mode.

My 1955 edition of the book "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" describes a joinery technique using angular drilling to create screw-hole pockets. Sound familiar? I set aside my pocket hole jigs and try this forgotten technique.

The most recent edition of "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" is published by Shopsmith. You can find an online version of this book at the following link.

Woodworking with hand planes is passion for some. Others just pick up a block, jack or rabbet plane to get a job done. Is there a place for an inexpensive vintage replaceable blade plane anywhere in this mix?

Shopsmith Power Station to Crafter's Station conversion is a bust. DIY tools stand casters are too difficult to use. I correct these mistakes to restore the tool stand to proper working order.

Wooden QR Code - No CNC: Links to My YouTube Homepage

Wooden QR Code made on a drill press. No CNC machinery was involved. The QR Code was design in Inkscape to encode the URL of my YouTube homepage.

I use my Shopsmith 510 in Drill Press mode to drill each cell. The main table's height adjustment crank is used to index the workpiece in the Y-axis. A special set of clamps, the Shopmate Maxi-Clamp, are used to index the work piece in the X-axis.

QR Code readers rely on high contrast to both detect and decode the QR Code. This is why most QR Codes you see are black and white. I use Dark Brown Rite Dye to achieve an adequate contrast between the drilled cells and natural wood field.

Table Saw Crosscut Sled: Large Panels Now Cut With No Problem

A large panel crosscut sled for a Shopsmith 510 is demonstrated. This inexpensive solution to large panels can also make repeated cuts accurately, even for smaller workpieces.

The panel sled is constructed of one half inch plywood for the base and fence. Three toggle clamps hold the workpiece in place. The sled is kept square to table using a hardwood runner which rides in the miter slot. Two plywood out riggers are attached to the table to provide infeed and outfeed support and stability.

I believe the broad notion for this solution came to me from a range of pictures showcasing other people's solutions on the Shopsmith Forums. My version is much more basic because I need to store all my tools in a very small space. Even so, this system has been very effective for me. It is not a made for YouTube gimmick, this is how I really cut larger parts for cabinets and such.
