I love my 10ER, but…

Post by Majones1 »

I may never be able to get my car in my garage again. MickyD is moving to Florida in a little over a month and, after having gotten me addicted to ShopSmith with his Model 10ER “gift”, has tempted me with the rest of his ShopSmith collection. Having turned me in to a SS addict I could not say no. So now I feel I not only owe him a couple of big BBQ dinners for him and his wife Claire, I owe them BBQ for life.

I have been watching eBay and Craigslist for, and trying to figure out how I could afford, many of the SPTs I now own. So, another temporary distraction from my woodworking projects to learn and maintain some new, to me, hardware. These new additions make my shop fairly complete. Here’s the list of equipment I now own:

Mark 5 Model 500 (s/n 309828)
ShopSmith Professional Planer Model M5082 (s/n 003918)
DC3300 Dust Collector (circa 1998) w/ 24” hood
Yuba 11” Bandsaw Model 630 (s/n 39807)
Magna Jointer Model 620 (s/n 17792)
Magna 6” Belt Sander Model 640 (s/n 13742)
Magna Jigsaw Model 610 (s/n 65001)
Complete Mortiser Kit w/ Hold-down
TenonMaster Jig
Shaper bits
12” Steel Sanding Disk
ShopSmith Safety Kit
Plus more drill bits, a Kit with counter sinks, sandpaper, and another couple of jigs.

* Picking up this morning. All has now been picked up or delivered. (On July 23 & 24, 2021)

My spouse may be less happy with this gift than I am. :D

Thanks MickyD!

Just make sure she gets a fair share of your time and attention and you will survive this. Even better if you can get her hooked too. Congratulations on the haul.

Marc,

An extremely nice gift from MickyD. Try and get your wife involved in some projects.

The Magna Model 4E Jointer is for the Model 10E and 10ER. It uses a special headrest and bracket to mount it plus additional parts specific to it. I hope it is with it.

Ha! I’m the first second or two of reading this I thought you were talking about “Greenie”! :D

Yes, I know a little bit about balance, and still have some challenges with it, but we’ve been together for 30 years and things still keep getting better.

I was mistaken, it’s a Model 620 (s/n 17792). I’m updating the above list with model and serial numbers now.

Yes, extremely nice. I’m trying to figure out what I can do to begin repaying his kindness. Of course, he said that it was just a blessing to him to know that it will be used and cared for as he would. Maybe we can squeeze a dinner and a play or concert in before they leave.

Did I forget to warn you? Collecting Shopsmith's can be habit forming.

The picture above is over 6 years old and the collection of Shopsmith I have kept has grown since then. The two on the left have since been sold but I have more of them now. :D

Yes, you and others did warn me, but I thought that with prior knowledge, and my space limitation, that it wouldn’t happen to me. But then came the ShopSmith dealer-man (MickeyD), and I couldn’t say no. :D

In all seriousness, everything here are things I wanted even before I knew what a ShopSmith was. So the fact that they fit in a small space is ideal. Plus, I’m pretty good at Tetris, so I will figure out how to get my car in here.

I think I hear the old SS friends talk about their adventures apart the past couple of months.

If you are interested and didn't know yet the Mark 5 S/N 309828 was made in October 1955 and is interesting because it has the "B" Headstock which changed that month but information had that at S/N 312507.

Your Jointer Model 620 S/N 17794 was made in June 1954.

The Jointer and Belt Sander look like they could use some TLC and are a nice addition to your collection. Ask Micky what paint he used for the other "Greenies" and you can restore the Jointer with matching paint. I can't tell for sure from the picture but the Belt Sander looks like it is gray.

Thanks Russ. I’ve been rereading your history of the Mark 5/V (part of your “Everything” series) and have been interested in specifying all the details/changes you discuss about the period of my “new” tool and then determine and document exactly what I have. I like to be prepared with exact configuration documentation prior to having any problems to minimize my having to stumble around trying to figure it out in the moment.

Included in the “other stuff” that I received from Mike was 4-1/2 cans of his hammered greenie rustoleum paint, so I’m covered there. And Yes, the belt sander is a dark gray. Also, the Yuba bandsaw is tan.
