Great article! Don't tell her, but the blue ribbon winning wooden Mark .5 she made (which is gorgeous) has its head stock mounted backwards in the photo.
Gale's Law: The bigger the woodworking project, the less the mistakes show in any photo taken far enough away to show the entire project!

Since the slide lock pin is in the correct place I think something else is sticking out the aux upper shaft. ???

Gorgeous does not do it justice. Is that ebony bases?

That might be a crank on the aux side of the headstock to turn the spindle. It is a work of art, a reflective synthesis formed of wood and machine.
