The ClearVue Max is rated at 1935 CFM. It has an 8" port, a 5 HP Leeson 230V motor and a 16" impeller. Of course you don't get max (1935) CFM through a 4" or 2 1/2" hose. However you get the max the hoses will support. I can leave all ports open (5 0r 6) depending) with no degradation.
So you were probably only getting 400-500CFM at that 4" port then probably? That is why it didn't whistle.

I got confused somewhere along the line. If I take the 3 X 2.5 plenum (manifold?) off of the DC-3300 do I have a 4" port? Or only if I adapt it with the unobtanium SS port or make something? I think the 4" line may work for my application, a DW735 Planer that adds considerable airflow on the front end, despite the relatively low flow of the 3300. And I don't need a long line, both tools are portable.

Note - Though the manual says 4", the standard adapter that comes with the DW735 will connect directly to either 2.5 or 4. I have not experienced any problems with 2.5" so far.

So the DC-6000 is going to get 600 CFM at the 2 1/2' port? huh I am not going to do the math but usually I have one 4" and one 2 1/2" port open at a time. Some times only one 4" port. You only get a whistle if you have a leak. :)

Anyhow, it doesn't matter. That much air flow makes a BIG difference. However, on a table saw (SS or otherwise) it is not enough because half the dust comes up from the back side of the blade to the top of the table. It doesn't matter what you do with the lower blade guard it won't help much.

The answer is an upper blade guard with dust collection. I have a Shark Guard on my SS and one on my Powermatic PM2000. The difference is amazing.

Hey John any chance on getting a picture of your Shark Guard set up on the Shopsmith? Does it cause any problems if you move the SS or do you always keep your SS in the same spot. My shop is small so I am always moving mine.
Thanks!

David,

It has been a while since I measured mine, but yes you will get a 4.x" opening on the DC-3300 by removing the plenum/manifold from the front. Mine is up in the attic now, so I can't easily go measure it, but it is around a 4" opening. I had planned to use 4" PVC for a very short trunk line of ducting in my shop. I believe I wrapped a 4" PVC line in some electrical tape in order to get a snug fit (and have it not get sucked into the impeller), so I think the DC-3300 opening is a little more than 4.5" (4" PVC has a 4.5" OD). The benefit, as I see it, of the 90°elbow from Shopsmith is the elbow permanently attaches to the DC-3300 (or DC-6000) with screws and has a flange to make it mostly airtight. By the way, when I took the plenum off of my DC-3300, that is the only time that my 42" filter hood ever fully inflated, so there is some restriction in the plenum (even if all 3 ports are open); makes sense because the area of 3 2.25" port is less than 1 4" port.

This is the only picture I have. It was taken in 2007 right after the SS version first became available. He has made a lot of manufacturing modifications to all the models over the years. The new ones look different but they all function the same.

The upper hose and lower hose are connected together with a Y and then there is a single hose to the dust collector.

Since I built my dedicated shop in 2009 I don't ever move the SS. However, I don't see why the Shark Guard would cause any problems.

I will go out to the shop and take a few more better pictures later today.

I didn't realize that had a combo of SS and standard(?) T-slots. Is it standard 1/4" where it mounts to the miter gauge? I like it! Probably has some erector-set type jig applications. Kreg offers a similar extrusion but without the SS T-slots of course.
