Question : Grizzly Growler

Post by bainin »

I am wondering if the Grizzly Growler cyclone will work with my (according to grizzly spec) low HP/LOW CFM
Jet Dust collector. Any thoughts?

It would seem that my dust collector is underpowered for this cyclone? What would be the effect of this combination?
The dust collector is all 4", I see the Grizzly is 6" so reducing adapter between the 2 would be needed.

Here is the Grizzly Cyclone unit spec:

Horsepower range: 1-1/2–3 HP
Drum size: 20" diameter x 22" H
Maximum drum capacity: 20 gallons
Airflow rate: 750–2300 CFM @ 2.3–3.2" SP
7"–6" Outlet reducer
6" Inlet with 2 x 4" "Y" adapter
16-Gauge steel construction
Overall dimensions: 25-1/2" W x 22" D x 67" H
Approximate shipping weight: 47 lbs.

And here is my Jet Dust Collector Spec

Motor Power 1HP
Air Flow @ 4" (CFM)650
Style (Type)Bag
Static Pressure (Wc.)6-1/2
Bag Diameter (In.)14
Collection Bag Capacity (Cu. Ft.)2-1/10
Collection Bag Length (In.)21-1/2

will you be adding any inlets or increasing the size of the inlets or outlets to the system ? JMO as long as the running load amp draw is with in its limit the motor should work ?

No- It would be run as a single tool system.
Currently its a 4" flex tube that has 2.5" reducers to connect to the shopsmith ports, or I just directly connect
4" flex to the tool (like dewalt planer for instance) ..but only 1 tool at a time.

Just spitballin’ here, but it seems to me that if your CFM is below the cyclone’s design threshold, the air wouldn’t spin fast enough inside the cyclone to achieve the desired dust-separation efficiency. I suspect that the drop in efficiency would be seen primarily in fine-particle separation.

The good news is that, everything else being equal, a cyclone that’s sized properly for your Jet collector should be smaller and cheaper.

Did you look at the Oneida Air options? I think their 4" Super Dust Deputy would work well with your Jet DC.

Yes- actually, the Oneida is the other one I am considering . This Grizzly one just popped up used nearby and would be cheaper with better options for the collection tank etc than the Oneida.

Ahhh, OK. I just looked at both and the new price from Grizzly is more than from Oneida Air. I was surprised to see that because usually OA is more expensive than all the other options.

With that said, I currently have two Oneida DCs and have owned several in the past, and have been quite pleased with the performance and quality of all of them.

Thanks RCZ - I'll likely go with an Oneida-just not happy with their cardboard barrel collector design.

Bainin

I wonder if they have a steel or plastic drum as an alternative? I haven't looked around so I don't know. If you want to contact someone there to talk to and get straight answers, send me a PM and I'll pass on the contact for the person I have dealt with for the past several orders.

They have these 1/2 metal barrels but cost as much as the cyclone itself !
