Good explanation fietben!
My local metals supplier, similar to a Metals-R-Us, carries angles, bars, structural sections like channel and beams, as well as pipe in many sizes. They have a rack of short cutoff pieces and I was able to get a piece of the "right" pipe about 2 ft. long for $10 (I think, memory is not great any more) .

Not to be picky, but you most likely got 1" TUBE with a 0.188" wall, which is readily available. There are no standard pipe sizes with a 5/8" bore.

Thanks Michael, you are right on!

Here is a homemade spur center:

It was made from a purchased mt2 center ($11 locally) like this:

It was made by turning the shaft of the mt2 to 5/8" diameter in a metal lathe, cutting it off about 0.5" behind the head and pressing it into a 1.8" long piece of the tube. It is pinned with a 3/16" roll pin.

I found 304 Stainless Steel Tube/Pipe with a 5/8" ID and 1" OD @ $33 per ft.. Would this work?

I also found Cold-Rolled steel tube with a 1" OD and .188" walls @$10 per ft. which yields an ID of .644 vs. .625" is this close enough?

Generally what kind of steel should I be looking for?
