yet another faceplate

Post by peterm »

Busy Bee Tools sell a 6 inch 3 jaw woodworking chuck that uses small cast iron adapters (about $8 each on sale) to allow mounting on various wood lathes. One of the adapters was 5/8" bore with the SS size set screw and three tapped holes for mounting the chuck. It is a nice snug fit on the Shopsmith spindle! :) But, I just found out today it may be a discontinued item, so for you Canadian SS owners, your local BB might still have them. :( Maybe Grizzley sell a similar item?
It occurred to me that I could use some pieces of scrap aluminum to make face plates for various uses.

One is about 3" diameter and the others are about 4".

The 3" has a 1/4" threaded hole and one of the 4" has no mounting holes yet.

I used a metal turning lathe to make the disks. Once the disk was screwed to the adapter, the assembly was mounted on a piece of 5/8" shaft and reinstalled in the metal lathe 3 jaw chuck for final trueing up and sizing.

Just found the adapter on the Grizzly site:
G3157 Insert - 5/8" Unthreaded w/ Setscrew, RH Thread

I wonder what else these could be used for on the Shopsmith.

After some searching, I found them here:

http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2012/Main/138

Busy Bee Canada do not carry them any more but on a recent visit to Edmonton, I lucked into the last two on their half price shelf!:p
My BIL bought a 510 from me so I made him one of those face plates...........
