Magna model 610 jigsaw- plastic yoke repair

Post by mikewashington »

I am rebuilding the "lower box" of my ancient Magna model 610 jigsaw. For reference, a copy of the manual is online at http://www.creativejewelrydesigns.biz/H ... Manual.pdf

My problem is a broken plastic piece on the "yoke" which is part #49 in the manual. My plan is to replace this part with high density plastic as suggested in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb17icIj ... r_embedded. I am having trouble getting to the yoke. I am trying to slide part #46, the lower chuck shaft, up to release the yoke (#49) so I can access the back of it. Having removed the limiting cotter pin, #45, and the set screw, #48, I also removed the pin in the flywheel, #51, which connects the flywheel to the broken plastic part. I thought the shaft would slide up and out, releasing the yoke.

This is where my luck ran out. The yoke did slide down the shaft about 1/2 inch but won't go any further. I have considered heating the yoke (like running hot water on a stuck jar lid to expand the metal) to see if it will release or, another crazy idea, breaking out the expansion plug, part #80, and trying to slide the shaft (#46) down through the yoke and out the bottom of the box to release the yoke so I can replace the plastic part. I have a queasy feeling like I am on the verge of doing something stupid and before I ruin my jigsaw I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks, Mike

The shaft comes out the top hole. Once you remove the cotter pin and the set screw in the yoke assembly, the shaft should slide easily out of the top. You might have a burr at one of the holes (for cotter pin or set screw) that is holding and needs to be removed.

Thanks, Rob-

I wasn't clear about what is stuck. It is the metal part of the yoke, which rides on the shaft and is secured with a set screw than won't slide off the bottom of the shaft when the set screw is removed. The broken plastic part is attached to the back of this metal yoke and slides back and forth on a bar to convert the motion of the circular power shaft flywheel to the up and down motion that drives the lower shaft and thus the blade itself. To replace the plastic part, the yoke must be removed to access the back of it that faces the flywheel. I apologize for making this so complicated.

Not only am I having trouble disassembling this thing but I am not sure whether trying to make the plastic part described in the You-Tube video will even work. The broken part is the "Yoke-Bracket Assy." part number 502275 in the exploded view in the manual and it is not available so I'm really stuck. Thanks for trying to help.

Bill Mayo might now have the yoke and could discuss disassembly. He was thinking of making some. Here are some old posts about the yoke....
