Here are pictures of the power cord installation I did today on the arm of my Sawsmith refurbishment.

When you bought the new power cord did it also come with the coil section as well?

No, the coil section is a separate part and no longer available from Shopsmith. In fact, there are now only three parts unique to the Sawsmith that Shopsmith still has available. I know because I checked their web site for all 249 separate parts for the Sawsmith that are listed on its parts list. Of those 249 parts, 52 came up on the site with a price. 15 of those 52 parts are available from a local hardware store. That leaves 37 parts. I called Shopsmith to order those 37 parts. Of those 37 parts, only 3 parts unique to the Sawsmith are available. They are:
the cord that I bought plus two items for the Motor-Carriage Assembly, specifically Ref. Nos 114 & 115 both washers for the Spindle. The part numbers are 501451 and 504553. Prices are $2.38 and $.93 respectively. Two members of the Sawsmith Group at Yahoo.com have had success using this coiled cord as a substitute part. The only issue I see is it is rated for a maximum of 13A and the Sawsmith uses 13.5A.

I tried the cord from grainger and it doesn't work right. The coils are too big around and when you pull the carriage out it bunches up at the end of the arm.

This reassembly took about three hours and takes two people. To have a sturdier top that did not bend or bow I made a support out of 3/8 inch plywood and put in 1/4-20 T nuts for attaching the base to the top of the cabinet. Stainless steel hardware was used everywhere. Fastenal had everything! Here is the board with the T-nuts installed.

I hope for this thread to be a one-stop resource for everything pertaining to the Sawsmith Radial Arm Saw. As I've been researching the saw, it seems that what little information there is is scattered across several places. This is my attempt to pool everything together into one location like I wish I could have found on my research.

I will keep this first post updated with new resources and information as I find it.


- Repair Procedures and Service Bulletins

I am hoping someone can help with identification of some service procedures mentioned in the above document. Page 4 has Procedures A and B. Page 5 has Procedures C and D. Page 6 has Procedure H. Page 11 in the solution "To replace shaft-screw or tube assembly" says to "See Procedure P - Follow steps 1 through 6". However Procedure P is not identified by that name anywhere in the document. Page 12 refers to Procedures N and S which also are not identified by those names anywhere in the document.

Does anyone know what those procedures are (N, P, & S) and where they can be found? I get the impression that there was an earlier document that used the alphabet to designate procedures from A through S and beyond. Does anyone have that document?

The Sawsmith Cabinet Stand parts list calls this a plunger, Ref No. 9, Part No. 4934

They are different from the mark VII although very similar. The shape is the same. The dimensions do vary as included above..

I found this item among my Sawsmith Radial Arm parts. It is one of the slide mechanisms for the front door to the base cabinet. I need another one. I found someone on the Yahoo Groups Sawsmith forum who has an extra one and is sending it to me.

This is the last task on my restoration. Here is the original table top that comes with a Sawsmith which is a maple veneered plywood 1 1/32" thick.

This is the replaceable cover I made to go over it made of 3/8" Baltic birch plywood.

This is the under side of the replaceable cover. Notice it is designed to just slide right over the original one. The screws squeeze the cleats tight so that is can't move after put on.

Here is a view showing the new fence installed as well. There is a 1/8" lip on it that hangs over the back edge of the table cover to hold it down tight without using any screws on that side.
