If there's interest an update with the control at 90% could be posted this weekend

Post by gpmark »

The documentation is progressing as time permits. The motor section is at 100%, the feed speed control is at 99%, and the control head (aka the original Shopsmith control box mods) is at 90%. The setup and calibration section is still real sparse.

The caveat is that I would do this only if people are going to give feedback on the documentation including clarity and problems to expedite things. So weight in if you are interested.

Until then please be careful in proceeding in case I run into a real problem in the modifications. I also noticed that some of the items in the parts list are incorrect last night.

We be patiently waiting for an opportunity to 'contribute'!:)

Critique not possible without an object with which to do so.;)

That said the pix illustrate the degree of finesse required to develop this.

You are to be congratulated on the amount of 'original' thought in cramming all the necessary parts into a very restrictive space.

It remains to be seen how many may implement your design.

I for one would like to do so($ may be an 'issue'). I currently have a manual feed planer and a 230v SS(power feed gets messy;)).

If it works as good as it looks it will be great.

On an alternate note; Right now I have only a fixed feed speed. My variable control is long gone. Does anyone have a readable motor tag ( voltage rating, current etc.). Shopsmith told me 35vdc to 90 vdc don't know the watts or current. If someone could post that would be great.

JPG40504 Thanks for the link to the post 93. Now I know that I can fix the one I just ordered off of ebay. ( Mine was a one speed ). Looks like a reasonable project if I ever have to tackle it.

Planer Upgrade Project -

Post by dcottrill »

Very nice post and Thank you for posting the information. I have read your post and wondered in the back of my head if or when I might need this information. Well last night my control box went. When I plug it in and turn it on all by its self it trips the backer in my shop. The AC motor still works and I need to get a DC source to try out the DC feed motor.

I've read your update on the control you built to replace it. Very nice, But I have some questions and comments.

Do you have any pictures of the feed control box, both on the planner and with the cover off so we can see what's inside?

Do you have a schematic? I'ver read it twice and with out the parts it is difficult for me to visualize some of the connections.

On page 11 you indicate that the trimmed box is ?? x??. What is the approximate size of the metal box?

Is the terminal block on page 12 the one in the picture/connector figure on page 11?

I would greatly appreciate your insight.

I have been following this with interest, unfortunately I have no electrical expertise to provide feedback.
