Scrap wood project gone wild

Post by tdubnik »

This project started out as a simple project to use up some scrap wood and at the same time build a Christmas present for my grandson. Things started out simple enough; rip some logs, cut some notches and accessory pieces and I'd be done.

That's when the gremlins came in. By the time I got done I had cut over 300 pieces and had quite a pile of logs. As I looked at them; I asked myself how can I store them? First thought was a simple cardboard box but I didn't really like that idea; so why not a wooden box?

That would work but there were so many pieces and they needed some organization. That's when the trays were envisioned. Then I decided the trays would need to be stackable so I devised a way to nest them using the end handles.

I also decided I needed to make my first through dovetails using my Incra router table setup. So I put both the box and trays together using dovetail joints. They turned out pretty good for a first try.

Here's what I ended up with.

There is no such thing as "scrap wood". This project is a perfect example. Those are cut offs that finally found a purpose in life.

And a very impressive purpose I might add. Great job. Great design!

This is more than good, this is most beautiful and your grandson will have hours of fun with this. He is so lucky to have a very crafty woodworking grandfather like you. Thanks for the pictures.

The logs and pieces are made from cypress and big box "white wood".

The trays and box are made from some walnut I scored on Craig's list a year or so ago. I had to buy the hardware which cost more than the rest put together.
