Mark 7 Restore Project

Post by GA Ben »

Got a Mark 7 I have to give up-

Wanted to let you all know first, as I want it to find a good home.
I bought this several years ago and have used it for various turning projects, and assorted shaper, router, and drilling projects, as I am a furniture maker and cabinet maker, but now am getting a dedicated Lathe and need the floor space.

It has served me well- the tool rest carriage aluminum casting is broken, and needs replaced. other than that, it has run great. Both directions work, both switches function correctly, it has a working non-melted speed cam, and (to the best of my knowledge) all original basic original equipment. the only thing it does not have are the retracting wheels/mechanism.

As far as restoring, it really only needs some polishing on the ways and a new paint job- maybe new bearings if you really want to overhaul it for fun.. I bought a copy of a owners manual with exploded parts diagrams in it and cleaned and checked everything and lubed it all after I got it, and before I ran it much. The base probably needs the most work of anything, as the sheet steel has a bit of rust on it. its still very solid though. I always wanted to get it blasted and re-sprayed, but didnt because it was comletely functional.

It is in Columbus, GA. Please pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.

I had thought about parting it out, but honestly dont have the time for it and would hate to see it all ravaged like that when its pretty much all there already...

Question: In "Parts Layout" What are the two arbors next to the shiny 1x8 tpi for? I know my ignorance is showing, but id rather find out than always wonder.... I have greatly used the jacobs chuck and the spur center for the lathe, but not the other 2 mystery chucks.

The lathe chuck adapter should fit the above lathe chuck and allow it to mount on the 5/8" quill shaft. The 1/2" threaded arbor will accept the shown shaper knives.

The arbor/adapter in the lower right of the photo is an adapter sold by Penn State Industries to adapt 1x8tpi lathe accessories to the Shopsmith 5/8" smooth spindle. The arbor to it's left is a Shopsmith 1/2" arbor for mounting shaper cutters on the Shopsmith. The next one over is a Shopsmith saw blade arbor for blades with a 1 1/4" bore. The long slender item is a pen turning mandrel. Those two triangular items on the right are adapters for mounting the four jaw chuck. The adapters and the chuck are sold by Grizzly and you can also get a faceplate that uses those adapters as well. Other adapters are available to fit the chuck and faceplate to additional lathes.

Much appreciated, gentlemen. The Saw arbor was the one that was stumping me.. I have never seen a sawblade with a 1 1/4" arbor in it.. that's interesting!

I figured the threaded shaft might be for shaper blades, but i don't have any of the blades- so it was a mystery. I also thought maybe you could use it for a grinding wheel... guess you could put anything you want that has a 1/2" arbor on it..

I got the 1x8 tpi chuck adapter for my supernova2 4-jaw chuck, and have used it a lot, but am getting new adapters to fit the chuck to my new lathe, so it will go with the machine. Same goes for the pen mandrel- I believe it is from PSI also- It comes with a matching pen shaft boring bit, and bushings for pen turning. I have actually never used it- If i decide to try pen turning again, I suppose I will get one to fit my new lathe. I think the mandrel itself was about the cost of what an adapter would be.
