No, you were right the first time... the shelf unit will be outside the existing opening. Hinged on the right, as you look at it, with the hinges afixed to the wall. Actually, a 3/4" board will be attached to the wall, to the right of the trim. Then the hinges affixed to that. The trim that you see has been planed so that the shelf unit won't be too far out. (I had to finish off the opening, inside and out, so that my wife would allow the closet to be 'unfinished' until I got the shelf unit built.)JPG40504 wrote:I assumed you did not wish to recess the shelves into the opening. I really think it best to provide support with two casters(tangent mounted) on each end/side, and not depend upon the hinges for support.
Just read your last post. So into the hole to look like a builtin is the object. Fergit all that false end/side nonsense!
If you have experience with hanging(not pre hung) doors with three hinges, then that be a plan. If not, two might be prudent. With casters supporting the entire weight, the hinging becomes simpler and less critcal.
Be mindful of the trim around the opening(Need to 'miss' it when opening.

thanks again for the suggestion of two casters...I think that you are right about that taking most of the weight off the hinges. Therefore, I should be able to use three regular door hinges...
And, sorry about the red, just wanted the responses to stand out.
