Well at least I shared that misconception with a lot of other folks!;)
Interesting 'truth'! Do take note that Barnum was 'involved'.

Hi,
I've gotten several this from this seller, from what dealings I have with him all seemed fine. He does have a old Ford to keep running so he may well need the money.
It was interesting to see the bidding pattern here:

Clearly the person who won was willing to spend the money as his last bid we can see was done on Jan 4 at 23:27:43. The price run up started Jan 5, and seems a little crazy having it going for so much but there is no explaining what people do on ebay.

What I found interesting was the ridiculous early bid followed by nudging bids by a single bidder up to(but not exceeding) the original bid.
A similar sequence occurred with the auction that started this thread with an also interesting difference.

A fellow that we had a long farming partnership with finally quit going to auction sales altogether. He loved going but swore that the auctioneers hypnotized him...
He would get caught up in spirited bidding and go waaay too high on fairly common items. Fortunately he could afford it...

With a 'live' auctioneer I like to remain in the back so as to be able to observe who is bidding(if anyone:D).
Keep my mouth shut until 'Going once', Going- . Then bid loudly and clearly and visually.
Been known to help with lagging bids on an item I could use, but didn't need if i could tolerate 'getting it'.
Cannot say the same re SHMBO! At an auction of a good friends estate auction, she wanted an electrolux so badly, that she kept out bidding herself. Finally when no one else was bidding, the auctioneer stopped her and informed her of what she was doing! She said "But I WANT it". Auctioneer said "SOLD"!
Still have it a quarter century later!

That's what I do to make sure the auctioneer isn't taking bids "off the wall" --literally taking bids from non-existent bidders. Of course with phone bidding becoming more common, they just pretend to take bids from phone bidders. There's millions of corrupt auction practices.JPG40504 wrote:With a 'live' auctioneer I like to remain in the back so as to be able to observe who is bidding(if anyone:D).
