It really doesn't need to be expanded all that far if you get the right size clip. (don't ask me what size that is, the sheet that came in the assortment box is lost, but if you do the hardware trip with piston in hand, you can buy-to-fit.
I mentioned that I did crimp it a bit before installation because I wanted it to be a real snug fit. I'm not sure that was necessary, but it made me feel better. I snapped into place with the piston out as a test fit & thought it was a bit loose, hence the crimping.
I installed by pulling the spring back with one hand, and rapping the clip into place with a tack hammer. Just a couple of taps. (A third hand would have been useful, here.)

And...a little more on e-clips
Stopped at a local hardware store & bought a clip. The size is 7/8" (name on the package is Hillman) & I found it in their lawn mower dept. It actually fits a bit better than the HF one because it wraps a little farther around the piston than the HF one.
There, now I'm really done with all this (I think).

Caster Wire Clip 'Available'!
I fairness to both Shopsmith and Dave, I must update this thread.
Called recently to order another part and mentioned the clip.
Dave stated they are now available!!!
I ordered one and am now satisfied.
Albeit they are now quite pricey!
So perhaps some 'good' came of this thread?;)
