worksharp 2000 or 3000

Post by oldc6 »

I have been looking at the worksharp 2000 sharpening system. It sure gets good reviews on the Rockler site. I need to use it mainly for chisels and lathe tools. comments on 2000 vs. 3000. does anyone have one or have operated one?? thanks

I've used both the 2000 and 3000 (and own the 3000) - you will NOT be disappointed with the 3000, while the 2000 seems (to me, anyway) to be more geared to rough grinding (lawnmower blades, garden tools, etc.) Others may have differing opinions on the 2000, but it seems for the money, you get a LOT more machine with the 3000. Seems a heftier-made machine, too.

The only thing you need to be aware of with either model is that they are messy because it is a dry system (obviously). The metal dust gets everywhere around the machine. Plan on a separate sharpening station away from your woodworking area.

Hope that helps give one opinion.

I have the 3000 but have not used it for lathe chisels yet.

if you come up with a good way to do gouges (especially fingernail grind bowl gouges), please let us know.

FWIW, I do find the separate $69 for the large blade holder to be out of line with what the 3000 costs, but that may just be the Scot in me.:)

I own the 3000 and agree with the above quote. I have not been disappointed in it's performance. It does sharpen chisels!

I have the 3000 as well. But the 2000 has an attachment you can set up and sharpen knives as well. I did talk with the folks awhile back about adding the knife sharpening attachment to the 3000. They said they would consider it if there was enough demand for it. A Woodcraft employee did show me how to use the 3000 to sharpen knives which I have done successfully. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

I bought a Work Sharp 2000 a couple of years ago, with the knife sharpener and was very pleased with it until this weekend. A friend came up to visit on Saturday and brought along his WS 3000. As a WS 2000 owner I'll say that for another 100 bucks, you get a whole lot more for your money. I wish I'd bought the 3000.

Work Sharp 3000 Upgrades

Post by oldcary »

I must say that after purchasing the Work Sharp 3000 it has brought hand tool working back to life for me. I now have acquired all of the accessories and attachments. Thus, I can now not only get my chisels and hand planes scary sharp but knives, wide blade hand plane blades, plus all lathe tools, and carving tools. I recently added the DMT sharpening and honing Mag Disc system that greatly reduces time, heat, and sparks associated with the dry sand paper. I will not go back to oil stones, wet stones again. I think Don is now a believer...:)

Take a look at this video to see how to super charge your WS 3000 AND save some bucks, too.
