I was waiting for this to come up. (Didn't know if it should or not.)dusty wrote:I drank my third cup of coffee this morning while sitting in the lawn chair staring at the Mark V trying to determine what might be causing these unusual (inconsistent) measurements.
I am now wondering if maybe this is a biproduct of the lift assist. This came to mind when I noticed that the lift assist is not centered between the tubes.
....
I am aware of this adjustment and things are sliding smoothly already. That doesn't mean it couldn't be improved and I will try to experiment this weekend.keakap wrote:What does the horiz align look like if you loosen the way tube lock screws on both ends and rotate each tube individually while observing the points?
(This is the procedure for getting the headstock to slide easily on the tubes. Makes a huge difference.)

When I installed my first Lift-Assist (a name that demands using full words, I note) the outfeed side of the tiebar (under which is the set screw) popped up off the headrest about 1/4". It had been sitting on the rest. This With the tiebar closed.
That's a relief!JPG40504 wrote:GOOF noted and corrected:rolleyes:
Thanks for the measurements. Yes, it does help my effort.pennview wrote:I don't know if these measurements add anything to this discussion, but I though I'd see how my 510 lines up.
I have a 24" vernier caliper that is made of aluminum and from China, so it's not a Starrett measuring instrument or anything close, but it will measure to 1/128". Here's an example of the caliper -- http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Q2F5WS/ref=asc_df_B007Q2F5WS2152166?smid=A3CXZ32ML2H79F&tag=dealtmp329867-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B007Q2F5WS

Actually, I measured to the outside of the way and bench tubes and then subtracted the diameter of the two tubes (3 1/2") from what I got. So, the greatest difference between the way and bench tubes was 20/128" or 5/32"
