You may be right. Home Depot and Lowes often bring in what I know as Sandply and call it appleply and that is what I thought you were talking about.
Also I was a little low on the ply count for Baltic a 3/4" sheet may have as high as 13-15 plys and 2 surface plys.
Sandply could be called assply without a problem. It seems like its A grade plywood. Then you put finish to it and it roughens up. The finish veneer chips and cuts horribly. I use it for some crude projects but I just don't trust it. Maybe it's the batch I've gotten, but then again it happens every time so it can't be blamed on one thing.
Wood magazine had a question about Applyply this month. They said it is premium plywood made in Oregon. Distributors can be found at statesind.com or you can buy smaller quantities at buyappleply.com. Looks like it come in 4x8 sheets, where Baltic birch comes in that size, but mainly in 5x5.
