i am another newbie that just aquired a model 510 and can't wait to get more familiar with my new found hobby.
The machine seems to be in good condition except the head stock doesnt slide well. I used Johnsons paste wax and that seems to be very temporary fix.
Next I think is just a good cleaning to remove what ever residue there is.
Alrady been playing with 45 deg cuts and next project is book cases for office.
Found this to be very relaxing and good for the soul.
Also am looking at used band saws.
Welcome to the Shopsmith world Make sure to get the rust removed from the way tubes and otherwise clean them and then wax and buff them and your headstock should glide like butter again.

Sometimes I find my carriage will not slide well if the headstock is locked. I think it just slightly distorts the centerline distance of the way tubes causing the carriage to drag or bind, when the headstock is not locked the carriage will move smooth as silk.

If that's a '90, did somebody rebuild the headstock with an older casting? The pictures show the old style (pre '84) toggle switch. I believe '84 and up use a newer safety toggle that's kinda square looking and requires a different shaped cutout in the casting.
I am also a new guy to the group, and first I would like to thank all of you for being great contributors to this Forum. I have been laid up for a few weeks following a routine foot surgery, and it has given me the time to spend going through the many Threads posted here, and I have learned a lot. I inherited a Green Mark V my mom gave my grandfather in the 50's. I was then taking wood shop in school, and was immediately interested in the tool. I used it in the 70's and it broke. It went into storage for about 20 years while I was working overseas. A few years ago I saw SS demo at a Home Show, and things have progressed from there. I upgraded to a 520, and I am now about to install a PP. I converted the old 500 Table to a router table also mounted on the Mark V rails,and it works great. Retirement is close and I am looking forward to making a bunch of saw dust!
