Today I sold a 1984 vintage Mark 5 in nice condition with the usual bits and pieces for $345 to make some room in my shop. I then went in on the computer and saw an email from a guy I know making me an offer.
Later today I visited the guy and bought an old Shopsmith “greenie” Mark 5. The serial number places it as 1958 vintage. I paid $150. Unfortunately it has a broken gilmer belt, however it did include seven saw blades and lots of other goodies seen in the photos. The motor runs and the speed changes ok, though I need to go through the headstock cleaning and lubeing and checking bearings. I was able to remove the stuck saw blade seen on the headstock. By removing the legs, I moved it home in a 2 door GM Tracker.
I know, it is a sickness...................

No, it is not a sickness. It is not a medical condition. Only alcoholism is a sickness; everything else, cocaine, marijuana, tobacco, and other such things that are ultimately self-destructive are addictions. If refurbishing Shopsmiths is destroying your life (or that of a family member) then it is an addiction. If no destruction of self or others is involved it is not. It is then called a productive hobby that keeps you off the streets and out of the pool halls - and extends your days on earth according to medical experts. Be careful with those saw blades lest you prove those medical experts wrong.
stickthrower, I built the cabinet awhile ago.

a little winter project
Have been watching this one on craigs for a few weeks.. I think it started at $1500.00. Then came down a little, and then down to $1000.00. Drove down yesterday to look at the stuff.
Looks like an 1984 500 upgraded to a 510. Everything was there includeing some extras..
The pictures show the inside of motor housing. Clean as a whistle... The arbor shaft hardly has a mark from allen screw.. Appears to have been used very little... Asked the owner about oiling, and got a stare back. Sheaves are a bit sticky. So, hopefully some oil, and elbow grease ready to make sawdust.
The dust collecter was part of the deal.. fifty mile away from here.. Will keep dust collecter but, the machine will have to go because, dont have room for another one.........The price llllllllllllllllllllllllllllll $550.00 done deal.
