We call 'em "rack jacks." It's a thin piece of oak (maybe 1/4" or more) about 1-1/2" wide (or less) by 8-10" long. It's function is to pull out the hot rack in an oven and shove it back in when baking stuff. The women in my family (the ones that cook anyway) love 'em. Pretty simple to make. Very nice. We use something similar that my father in law made many years ago, strangely enough I found the pattern he used just the other day while I was reorganizing my shop.
