I have similar worries, about myself. The line between passion and obsession is pretty darn thin.

I'm like you, in that I like the social possibilities of owning a SS. I hope you either find or are able to get a local club started. I'm really looking forward to meeting the group in my area.

My wife and I purchased an older Airstream trailer last July and we love it. Until we were looking to buy one we had no idea how many AS owners there are out there. Turns out that owning an AS is like joining a social club. If you want that aspect, that is. We had to drive from our home in Virginia to Ohio to pick up the AS. Our first first and second nights as AS owners were spent in our AS "Courtesy Camping" in another AS owners driveway (whom we had never met) so they could look through our AS and make sure we knew how everything worked, etc. A terrific couple to say the least, but indicative of all the AS owners we've since met.

I get the feeling SS owners are pretty much the same.

Turns out my father-in-law owns a SS. I knew he'd owned one, but I did not know he still has it. He lives all the way down near Key West, FL, but said it's mine if I want to have it. I believe he got it new back in the fifties. The last time I saw it I remember thinking it looked pretty rusty, but then what doesn't after a few years in that part of the world.

My wife and I are headed down there the end of April to join her brothers and sisters to celebrate her dad's 90th birthday. I'll get to see it then. From there we're heading to Cathedral City, CA for our oldest daughter's graduation from Dental Hygiene School. We'll be towing the AS and plan to spend the rest of the summer traveling around the Northwest, Yellowstone, etc. So, if I decide to take him up on his offer I'll have to swing back down to Florida on the way home to pick up the SS. It may be a bigger project than I want.

I'll be the first to say it. "ya know the Shopsmith can break down into parts pretty easily. Sure you don't want to bring it with you to Yellowstone?"

I doubt that will happen, but I've been know to flip flop on occasion. If I were the only one voting it would stand a better chance.

Wouldn't it be CHEAPER in gas and time to just take it with ya the first time?]

All excellent points my wife will never consider.

Seriously, this will be such a long trip (about 3 or 4 months on the road) that we'll be packed to gills with stuff we'll take with us. The back of my short bed truck is where I'd have to put it (doubt the wife would be willing to hold the headstock in her lap for 8 thousand miles) and I'd probably hate the damn thing by the time we got home, having to move it around every time I wanted to get our bikes, generator, etc, out of the back. Besides, going to Key West twice in a year is not really a bad thing.

While there the first time ship it home to a buddy. You can make sure it is broke down and boxed up how you want it, insure it and then coming home is like Christmas.

BTW garage didn't get so much cleaned as rearranged and you aren't going to believe this, but I have found another deal I can't pass up, so tomorrow I am making another road trip. I can't tell you guys for what or where until I get back. Not that I don't trust you guys. I am sure none of my Cali buddies would try to snipe my find

Actually I would probably be better off considering this obvious problem I have with purchasing equipment.

You may be shaking your head with concern, but when I get back with it you will all say something like "OOOOOHHH well yeah he had to get that!"

Oh I forgot something. Chuck (Local SS owner) is coming over on Monday around noon and he is going to show me how to use all this stuff I bought.

I am sure Chuck is reading this and thinking "He said we were having lunch".

My wife suggested I let Chuck have whatever he sees out in the garage that he takes a shine too. She thinks she's funny
