Thjis appears to happen when unloading from a pickup truck or trailer and the end is dropped before setting it on the ground. Could happen when moving the Shopsmith and the leg was stopped by a raised surface. Insuring all the leg bolts are really tight when moving the Shopsmith helps prevent this problem.

I find JB Weld does not hold up well when there will be vibration, stress or torque on the area being patched.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will drill a new hole to make it sturdy.

Primer is on

Post by cllib »

The self etching primer is on the headstock, belt cover and motor pan, inside and out. :D

Do I have to paint before 48 hours or shorter?

the threaded coupler too big for my 1/2" drill chuck

Post by cllib »

I don't have any SS with 3/4" chuck?
Anyway I can find a smaller OD nut with 5/16"-18 thread?

That should fit into a 1/2" chuck.

A standard 5/16-18 nut is 7/16" across flats.

'1/2-20UNF' refers to the mounting bolt thread.

Methinks you have a 3/8" chuck.;)

I just cut the head off a 2" 5/16-18 bolt.

Base reassembled

To repair the crack base I drilled a hole 1" away drom the center crack hole.
I used the JB-weld to fill the crack.
I didn't countersink the hole. I used a washer on outside to increase the contact area between the aluminum base and stainless steel screw. :D
