Noobie with a few?s

Post by jakemilburn »

First and foremost hello to all and what a great site. After many years of wanting a SS my dad ran across not only one but two mid seventies mark Vs at an unbelievable price of $1200 with alot of goodies with everything in good shape. He told me as soon as I have a place to put one he would give me one with a basic setup,I finally got my new shop and went to pick it up.After plugging it in it was bogging down so I unplugged it and just turned the shaft by hand and noticed a metal to metal rubbing sound.Being a very mechanically inclined person I immediately tore into the headstock to investigate the problem.I figured out after some reading on this great site that the bushing under the fan sheave on the motor must be wore out causing the motor fan to actually rub into the motor. What Im wanting to do is basically rebuild the entire headstock with new control sheaves, but Im unsure of what else besides the speed control to also replace(it seems shot).I know new belts but what else should I replace to get this thing to as good as new from the get go? Also should I go ahead and take apart the motor to clean the saw dust in it? Or is this something that should be left alone and just sprayed out with a air hose? I also plan on taking all the base apart for a good cleaning ,inspection and a fresh coat of paint even though none of it is rusted at all I just like things to be nice and look nice. Thanks in advance for any help from such a great site and look forward to getting this thing going.

Hi Jake,

Something to consider too:

Jacob Anderson's headstock videos and rebuild service

If you check Ebay (click here to see his auctions), you'll see his auctions for two-disc DVD sets on headstock maintenance and rebuilding, plus auctions for the headstock rebuilding service itself.

His homepage is at:

Headstock and Motor Rebuilding

Outstanding DVDs and an investment for Shopsmith owners. I even relearned forgotten information from them. Jacob really does an outstanding job teaching technical information for the lesser informed non-mechanically inclined person. The Shopsmith design is based on the 50s knowledge when things were much simpler to repair/fix. Jacob ships very quickly with PayPal so there is almost no wait time until receiving the DVDs.

I am hoping he will do a DVD for each of the SPTs soon.
