Sacrificial fence for shopsmith 520 fence

Post by marvin »

I need to build a sacrificial fence for molding. I see the sketch in the PTWfE
4th edition page 68, but I do not see how to fasten that to the 520 fence. I have no holes in my fence and do not wish to drill any.

The 520 fence takes special T-slot washers that can be used for attaching jigs.

Here's the T-slot washer: http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... turesC.htm

Here's a video about using them in jigs: http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Tips_Ar ... t_Jigs.htm

And here you will find a plan for the tall fence extension from the video: http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Tips_Ar ... ension.pdf

Of course, you might also just clamp a board to the fence.

You can either build that fence as suggested in PTWFE or build in in a h shape which is what I have done.

The sacrificial fence straddles the rip fence but fits tight enough that it becomes almost one with the rip fence. If needed, the t-nuts can be used to secure the sacrificial to the rip fence either in the side or the top T-slots.

Al & Dusty Boy you guys are quick.
I appreciate the response. I think these should solve my problem. I already have some of the T slot washers but couldn't figure out how to use them. I did go to the HD for some carriage bolts but could not see how to tighten them once the tall fence covered the rip fence.

I use the Rockler table saw fence clamps http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=17821 they are cheap and quick to get on and off.

A minor "issue" about these clamps....

See this post:

http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showpost.htm?p=39217&postcount=8

The t-slots on the sides of the 520 fence line up with the placement of the pad on the clamp, so you need to add an additional pad or similar before use.

My fence is higher and the clamp hits above the grove.

Ed what sort of workaround would you suggest ?
The question is open to Dusty as well or anyone else for that matter ?

I'd secure the sacrificial fence (built to wrap the rip fence) using the Shopsmith t-nuts.

A picture rather than a lot of words.

The t-nuts could be used in the tracks on top of the fence, if you preferred, to avoid any interference with the smooth face of the fence. Mine are counterbored to provide the required clearance.
