A Trip To Tucson

Post by Gene Howe »

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Tucson. Oh, do I ever love that town. 77 deg yesterday. One son lives there and his twin was in town from Okinawa. He was house hunting. Found a nice one that is about 1/2 mile from The Saguaro National forest and 20 minutes from the AF Base where he’ll be working for the next 4 years. Like most new home owners, he's already planning to add, remodel, change, etc. The previous owners had converted the attached 2 1/2 garage to a "Bonus Room". The entrance was at the back so, the front of the house remained the same. His immediate??? plan is to add a detached 3 1/2 car garage (1 1/2 of which will be a shop) with a Ramada to the side to shade part of the pool. He wants to remodel all three bathrooms and move or eliminate some walls, too. Sounds like his dad will have plenty to do in the next few years. I told him to plan most of the work for winter. :D

We ate like kings. Lingua Tacos, Sonoran Hot Dogs, Jambalaya, Vietnamese cuisine. I had the Pho with sliced beef, tripe and, as it's specified on the menu, "Beef Balls"... Yep, that's what they were!

And, I couldn't leave Tucson without a trip to Woodworker's Source. When I was there, a gentleman was presenting a class on shop made router tables and fences. I only watched for about 10 minutes, but he had some very slick ideas. And, over in the carver's corner were about 8 old guys doing all sorts of carving. They meet there twice a week. Great bunch of guys.
Of course I had to drool over all the exotics. I swear there was more ebony in that store than I've ever seen in one place before. I only bought Kreg screws. ;)
On the way home we stopped by a Ford dealership in Phoenix and picked up a new Focus. Nice car.

While it's great to be home, we already miss our boys. Soon though, (July) everyone will be together and we can see them all (grandkids especially) most anytime. I figure if we work it right, we can bunk with each for a week or so, and with rotation, spend most of the winters in Tucson. :D :D

Tomorrow is shop time. More work on the gun cabinet. Hope my tools haven't forgotten me. Five days off so, I'll probably have to retrain them. Except for the old MKV, of course.

Are you located in the Phoenix area? I am in east valley and have a Mark 5 and occassionally have questions. Is there a Shopsmith club in the area specifically or any woodworking clubs?

Fred, I live in Snowflake....or as my sons call it, "Snoreflake".
I don't know of a SS club in or near PHX. There are a few(maybe more) guys with SSs there, though.
