The problem is there is never enough information to determine if it is a good deal. Which usually means rounds of picture or description requests. A picture says a 1,000 words - please post a picture of the other items.frank81 wrote:We've debated the issue before, but I could care less about the quality of the ad. As long as I can tell what it is, have a reasonable idea as to the condition before burning gas, and the price is reasonable I am OK. I'd rather have a reasonably priced turd of an ad than a professional seller asking $4500.
The ads usually mention a planer, which can be assumed to be a jointer. Once in a while there is the "and other stuff". "Other stuff", like what? SPTs, bits, accessories, box of wood cutoffs and junk? My first 510 was bought for a reasonable amount and the guy kept trying to clean his garage. He threw in some useful items like pipe clamps and some weird stuff like wood cutoffs and a board with nails sticking out of it.
Just bought a project machine, which will be the newest machine I own. Picture was on the main machine, didn't show accessories or other items. Listing includes SPTs which were gone by the time I was contacted, but the listing was never updated to reflect that. It needed just a little work and the speed dial was run up and down "just last week." Funny since the button bearing that connects the speed control to the sheaves was broken and the clip was sitting in a box of stuff.
Hoping the motor which hums is just pinched by the sheaves. Going to need to replace at a minimum the button bearing, speed control, belts and maybe the motor. I have my original 500 that I can always swap out the parts or headstock, although I do like the safety switch with kids around. For what I paid I got my value in the tables and accessories although that saw guard always seems to be missing.
