My next project

My first purchase ('56 Greenie) is still in rehab. I paid $100 for it, but there were no attachments included. When I found this one for sale on a local board for $50, I just couldn't help myself. I guess I actually paid $50 for the attachments and received a free base unit with my purchase

This one arrived with the stock lathe components, disc and drum sanders, a nice drill chuck, and several home-made lathe faceplates. The belt cover and the table are also included, but not shown in the photo.

The headstock seems to be frozen in place, but it's (otherwise) in good shape with smooth bearings. I believe it's been in drill press mode for the last several years.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this one, but it ought to be a fun and reasonably quick rehab.

It's a model 10E, serial number E-6614

I always love to see the wide array of bases people made for the 10E/10ER's - every time I see one (including the two I bought), the bases are very unique. You mentioned the headstock is frozen - does the motor turn on its own?

I guess I ought to rephrase that statement. The headstock is frozen on the way tubes only. Releasing the wedge screw did not loosen it; I don't know if the wedges are just stuck or if it's rusted in place. It's tough not tearing into it right away, but I really need to finish up the other three or four restorations I have going right now (1 shopsmith, one bandsaw, one jointer, and the jointer motor).

In any case, it powers up and spins very well. Having de-rusted one of the included arbors, I'm going to power it up and attach a wire wheel to help clean the rest of the components!

The guy I bought this unit from is the son of the original owner. His father is still alive and well, but wasn't around when I came to pick it up. Too bad for me, as I would have loved to talk with him for a little while.

The base is (as far as I can tell) made from pine and plywood. It's a bit loose here and there, but may be salvagable. I think it would be neat to leave it as is!

The locks have a tendency to 'stick'. Unfortunately, the threads are in a separate nut, not the wedge itself. There are different versions of the lock. An E most likely has the two wedge lock. My E was stuck to the headstock when I got it as well! Try taking the handle,washer and outer wedge off. The nut will fall in to/out of the headstock. Dropping the motor will get access to the inside.

Very interesting bench. Well thought out methinks. Hope there is a 3/16" hex wrench in that 'collection'.

Lol! Yeah, I guess those were freebies. I'd almost bet there's more rust on those wrenches than there is on the entire 10E.

Thanks for the heads up on the wedges / locking system. I guess I get to research Shopsmith all over again

On that note, why did the "Everything Mark V" post get a sticky, but the "Everything E/ER" did not? (hint hint... )

Wow! I didn't know that thread existed! Is MickyD still active and available to make updates? If not, should new threads be made for the Mark 5/V and 10E/ER and ask an admin to sticky them?
