I use Nevr Dull. It's cheap, it will clean up any surface rust without scratching, and leaves a protective oil behind.

Running around Lowe's today on Memorial Day, I ran across JPW there. $4.99 a can, original formula. Exact same brand and colored can as I had gotten from the previous owner when he sold me his SS.

Guess I'll be set for the next hunnerd years. :D

I bought one of the "Help Kits" from SS a few years back when I started trying to resurrect my long neglected MV - it included a can of MinWax, so that seems to be the flavor of choice these days from the Mothership...although I'm guessing there's not a significant difference between MinWax and JPW
'78 Mark V 500 #27995 (my Dad bought new)
'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

Would be my guess, which ever is cheaper for SS to buy in large quantity.

Been away from the ShopSmith Forum for a while,

Johnsons changed the formula for their wax a maybe two years ago. I have a little of an old can left. It is a nice thick yellowish wax. The new stuff is grey and soupy in the Florida heat. Seems they removed the Carnuba from the formula.

when I bought the first can I thought I had just gotten a bum batch and picked up another from a different store. Opened it up and had the same grey goop. Did a little research on the internet and found that Johnsons had changed the formula. It may say "Original" but it ain't. The new stuff doesn't seem to glaze over and harden up like the old JPW did. I've never been a big fan of Minwax but it seems better than the "new" JPW.

My 2 cents.

I bought an "Original Formula" JPW at the Big Box Store within the last few months, and my experience is quite different. No grey goop. The wax is thick and yellow. I also found the official JPW ingredients list for the "Original Formula" and it DOES include Carnuba wax. http://www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com/en- ... e-wax.aspx

It is possible that they received enough complaints to go back to the original. I've not looked at any in the stores in over a year due to being so disappointed in what it had become. When I first got the Grey Goop I went to the Johnsons website and checked and they said that there was no change, further looking on the internet confirmed my suspicions that it had changed. There should be some old posts on the subject and I remember reading in other forums about the same thing.

I will look at the UPC codes on the cans and see what they say.

Went by the house and looked at the cans. All have the same UPC code 46500 00202 took the pics as well. None of the cans say "original" formula, just Johnsons Paste Wax.

The first of the Grey Goop cans was purchased at Wally World, second at the Big Orange Box Store

I picked up a can from the orange box about a month ago and it said "original" on the red stripe and the wax was not grey. They must have the original and non-original varieties?

Edit: it IS grey and soupy
