OK, I apologize, in the red stripe it does say original formula. Never noticed it before. Any way around it they seem to have changed the formula. From the other pics posted I now know that I've not lost my mind, at least not on this subject.
I remember reading somewhere that Johnsons had removed the carnauba for some reason. That would certainly explain the change in color and consistency. Seems to me that what is left is paraffin and mineral spirits and not particularly useful to me.

Replacing Johnson's Paste Wax
You young guys/gals need to start looking for your replacement.
JPW is all I have ever used and all that I ever will. Based on past consumption, I have enough on hand to last for as long as I will be waxing a Mark V.

Apparently this is not 'new' news'.
I checked a can purchased months ago and it has the larger code, and, grey goop color. However it is less goopy than the one I checked at HD. I will begin using that can to determine if it is different in use.

Here is the list of ingredients in Johnson's Paste Wax.
http://www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com/en- ... e-wax.aspx
The MSDS shows:
Stoddard solvent 8052-41-3 60% to 100%
Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes 8002-74-2 10% to 30%
Carnauba wax 8015-86-9 5% to 10%
1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene 95-63-6 1% to 5%
The can should have a product formula number on it such as 35*3599. That formula number determines the specific percentages of each ingredient in the can. The UPC code does not change even if the formula number does.
My Shopsmith help kit came with Trewax Paste Wax. It works just fine and is hard in the can because it has more carnauba wax in it. It is not cheap. It costs $22.11 a can.

I guess I'll start keeping an eye out for JPW at garage sales...I see that sort of stuff sold all the time and don't usually pay much attention, but given it's shelf life, I'd definitely grab a can or two or original stuff if I saw it garage sale prices.
'78 Mark V 500 #27995 (my Dad bought new)
'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

I got a can of JPW last year but never opened it. After seeing this post I figured it was time to do so.
Smell is the same, texture feels the same. It is a paste and stiff, in a couple of years I expect it will stiffen even more as vapors off gas. Yes a different color but that was the only change I noticed.
Today I went to wax the machine and figure I might as well give it a go with the "new" wax. If the garage had been dark or if I were wearing a blindfold and unable to see the color I would not know it was different (again the color thing).
Results were the same as the other "color" older wax, it works fine. Also wax my plastic funnel lathe dust collector, that went well too.
For some other good reading on wax/top coat and much much more from 2007 go here:
