Success!! Had enough time last evening to finally really dig into the problem. I adjusted the tubes to the point that both the headstock and carriage moved reasonably easy. Got everything tightened back up and then I corrected a mistake I made with waxing the tubes. I had used car wax on the tubes. Didn't know that using car wax was wrong until I got an email from another forum member and read some of the forum posts about the wax. Anyway, I cleaned off all the old wax and put on Trewax. After drying I buffed it and what a difference! Now the headstock and carriage move with virtually no effort on my part. Thanks to all for your help.
Now I'll move on to actually using it. Can't wait to hook up the band saw!
