Craigslist is definitely the place to look but the asking price is too high. Just keep looking. In my area they come in clusters, for a while there is nothing and then, paff!, six or seven appear at the same time.

I have seen the 500 for $200 and less, with accessories up to $500

I got a great deal this weekend but I will post that later. Definitely you should be able to get a functional unit with bandsaw and jointer for less than $600.

Or you could see just how much he needs some cash. Take $500 or $600 (or whatever you decide you're willing to spend on this) in a stack of $20s, and lay them on his table. If he balks, pick them up and walk away. Seeing that much cash walking away might make him change his mind.

The potentially buyers experiences with this sales attempt will temper that reaction significantly. If there have been others that have not purchased, this approach could result in a quick sale (before the money can get out the door).

If this guy has done any research at all, he knows that he is asking too much.

So while you are keeping your eye out elsewhere for the right deal, do yourself a favor and read up on all the various models, accessories/attachments, etc and ask lots of questions here so you are sure to know what you what and what you are looking at when you go to check out machines in the future. I would definitely recommend trying to hold out for a model 510 or 520 if you plan to use the table saw much - the table upgrades on these models are substantial over the model 500 machines.

I would go along with what everyone chimed in with especially dgale. There is an enormous amount of information on this forum that can keep you reading for hours, maybe even days. The willingness of members to offer help is beyond amazing!!! Thank you all........

My SS from craiglist was a very week ad and no pics, $400, but after a couple of weeks thought I would give it a look. As the gentleman pulled up the roll up door on his storage unit, there was a 1994 Model 510 with the 520 table upgrade, as well as a bandsaw and dc3300 dust collector.

SS just don't appear to hold there value as much as some sellers think they do, no matter how much they cost new. Good luck with your search.

I think it is high but it is in awesome condition and a newer band saw. You can certainly find older machines a lot cheaper but the newer ones are higher and it adds up do you want a good running machine or a good looking running machine. I often druel at the newer ones but the older ones function very well.
I have a mark v and a 520 and (3) 10ERs reconditioned and I like them all.
I know they pay a lot and want to get it back. however, in the economy you get what the market will bare.
