Quill/riving knife issues...
Hello again all. I'm having an issue that I can't seem to find any info on. I recently acquired an early 90s 510, and I've tuned/lubed/waxed, etc per the manual and the info I've learned on the forum. The problem I'm having is that when I put on the upper saw gaurd, the riving knife/splitter is in perfect alignment w/ the blade, but when I'm cutting, it is out of alignment by maybe 1/2 the thickness of the multipurpose blade. After noticing this, I discovered that even though the quill is locked, I can move the quill laterally about the same amount as the cut is off (what I would call thrust or end play/slop), about a 1/16th of an inch. Is this an adjustment issue or something more sinister? Thanks for the help.
Are you sure it is the quill moving? Check the set screw on the blade arbor that it is not worn out. I had a problem with the knife alignment years ago and it was the set screw loosening. Replaced the set screw and have not had a problem since. If the quill is moving make sure the teeth are good on the quill and pinion and not full of sawdust.

Quill/riving knife issues
mandmj,
In an attempt at giving the needed information, I am going to give you the following imperical data "from my machines and blades.
The riving knife, thin kerf combination blade and carbide tipped combination blade measure .008", .010" and .013" respectively.
The end to end play on my quill is less than .003".
A 1/16" end play (.063") - seems to me to be excessive. But don't go an order a new quill until you get more feedback or until you poss this question to Shopsmith customer service (1-800-543-7586).

My suspicion is the teeth in the teeth of the quill housing or the teeth in the pinion gear are damaged. Hopefully only one or two teeth are effected, Extend the quill about an inch (half of a rotation) and tighten it in place. then check for you lateral movement. If there is no movement, this is the problem. If you still have the 1/16" movement, this is not the problem and you will need to disassemble the quill.

Check the bearing retaining ring.
I had a similar thing happen a few years back, when turning a bowl. The bowl seemed to be coning out to meet me when turning the inside. What it was is behind the "silver knurled ring" is a retaining ring to keep the bearing in place and I had not bedded it down enough after servicing the quill. I had the whole quill striped down to "see what's inside" and not put everything back just right.
Once I had the retaining ring re-seated every thing was okay again.

Sandy

If the quill is moving in the headstock, you have not tightened the quill lock. For safety and accuracy, the quill lock should be tightened for sawing operations, as well as many sanding and lathe operations. If the spindle is moving in the quill, then one of two things is wrong. Either (1) the retaining ring at the front of the quill is missing or not properly seated, or (2) the bearings are shot. From your description, my money is on Sandy's suggestion -- check the ring.

Well, now I feel a bit silly. It's not the quill that's moving, it's the spindle assembly. W/ the spindle knob off, I removed the snap ring, cleaned it and the groove, reseated it against the shim washer, and the spindle slop play is unchanged. The inner bearing race moves just perceptably w/ the spindle, but the quill is not moving. So I guess I'll be researching some new bearings...
Thanks for the help
