Log in Issues Windows 8

Greetings, a couple of weeks ago my bride presented me with a new windows 8 laptop. When attempting to log in to this forum I discovered there are some issues in doing so. One appears to be that my email address for log in purposes has somehow reverted to an earthlink email address I haven't used in a couple of years. In that I can no longer access the account I was unable to view the response from Admin and potentially cure my issue. I made the mistake of phoning customer service. Dave was kind enough to explain in detail that I um totally uninformed and that he had no knowledge of how or whom to contact. He further explained that Shopsmith does not host the group and that if I would email customer service perhaps the correct person could be found to assist me. No I did not email them. One major insult was more than enough for me that day. I would love to straighten this out in near future as I will likely have shoulder surgery soon and will once again be banned from my shop. I do hope admin sees this request. Jim

Jim, can you upgrade to W7?

As happened when the "brick" Vista was released, most manufacturers allowed an upgrade (then) to XP. They're now allowing an upgrade to W7.

Yes, I said upgrade. Newer isn't always better. (Don't make me dig out those pictures of the Shopsmith factory, and all the ERs!)

I was having some failings of what will be the last Acer laptop I will ever own

(even the case was breaking apart) just before I was to turn myself in at the hospital for my bypass. I thought I would be spending a lot of hours on-line especially doing genealogy work both in the hospital and when I first got home. Silly me...

The one thing that they failed to tell me and I had not read much about was just how brain damaged I would be when I woke up and for a good month after I got home. Any kind of detail work was a pipe dream. "Oh, yeah... that is normal, it will just take time..."

Any who... The week I went in I bought myself a new laptop, HP this time, with... yep. Windows 8... Probably soon to be awarded the title of "the worst operating system of all time!"

Looking back I would have probably been wiser to have waited anyway just to see if I lived or not.

Stupidly I decided to give Windows 8 a sporting chance. Egads they made a lot of pointless changes including nomenclature that just made for more confusion and accomplished nothing. After I was out of ICU my wife brought me my new laptop but I rarely used it at first. I didn't think that getting that angry was good for me. After Windows 8 crashed badly for the third time doing really simple stuff (and lost a batch of pictures, some of which I had not backed up yet) I pretty much just shoved the thing aside.
About the second day I was home, even in my fog, I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of Ubuntu Linux and have not looked back...
Now in all honesty this last release of Ubuntu (13.10) is a little too much more "Windows like" than I really like. I'm doing some looking around at other Linux distributions. I can't really blame Ubuntu. They are just trying to give people what they demand. It just isn't what I want. I do really love how I never have to mess with drivers etc. and how anything you plug in to it just works. What I don't like is this concept of mucking about in my computer and making too many decisions for me, like Windows does. That is also the direction that most on-line sites are going especially places like Facebook. The "KISS" system is going down for the third time all over the place. I want to scream "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" at them.

Change what needs changing but quit changing stuff for no valid reason... Just making it "different" for the sake of "different" is not an improvement.

Now burning soap box.

You should not have burned that soap box!!!

Glad to hear that you are doing well. Just do not get too aggressive about "going back to normal".

Fuzzy thinking that is all too common.

New(different?) is better!!!!:rolleyes:

P.S. I am surprised there is anything left of that soap box after that fiery tirade!

Windows 8 gets a bad and undeserved rap. For a laptop with touchscreen it is great. However you need to do some things first:

Download Win 8.1 and install it. This makes it more user friendly but also creates another problem related to loging in.

I've set mine up so that when I power up it asks only for a PIN (Administrator account). When my wife logs in it boots immediately with no requirement for a PIN and her email doesn't require a password.

If this is what frustrates you then PM me or reply here and I'll give the directions.

Putting greasy fingers on the screen is not my idea of an improvement nor a screen based keyboard with no key motion nor force related tactile feedback. I get frustrated with these recent keyboards that the wind causes to move!:mad:

All that stuff makes perfect sense with small 'mobile' devices but IMHO are a force fit for a reasonable sized human interface.

I consider a full sized keyboard with good human factors(tactile feedback that rocks) to be an 'iconic' design.(pun intended!)

P.S. any one know how to disable all the 'added features' that are activated by ctrl or alt + letters that causes departure from just plain old 'typing' input? A curse upon me for sure!:(

Why in the blazes would I want to type on my laptop screen? I have enough trouble getting people to keep their greasy fingers off of it now.

It has a keyboard...
I was pretty happy with XP but I don't just dislike Windows 8, I absolutely detest it and I can tell you that I am not alone by a long shot. It's "bad rap" is well deserved... If it was free (like Linux) or inexpensive I could cut them some slack but they want the big bucks as if it were an actual working operating system.
It's like saying that "this is a good car if you stop and tinker with it every 57 miles..."

Hug Microsoft all you want, I'll stick with just opening the lid and everything working and for free to boot.

I have a batch of Shopsmiths... I can make new soap boxes all day long...

I also 'liked' XP(using it now FWIW on this old puter I be using this week(needed to access some stuff only resident on it)}, and am not thrilled with "7", but after using "7" a year or so have liked some of its 'improvements'. I got used to those improvements and miss them back on XP. Not show stopper thing, but more convienience.

I also just realized the Crtl/Alt - char thingey must be Fire Fox caused. I be tripping over that stuff on XP also.

Well I avoided the 'vista fiasco and hopefully the 8 also.

Seems like every other 'release'. . . .
