I sure hope your HP is a whole lot better then the disaster I purchased. I don't even want to think about all the issues mine has had. It is flatly the worse computer I have ever seen. My daughter got an HP and I told her not to do it but she did anyway, I think hers might be the second worse one I've seen. She is saving up to have it repaired again. I'll spare the details but there will never be another HP laptop in my future even if they gave it to me. When they finally did a recall on mine they offer an much less capable replacement, I mean who does that? I decided to keep mine, then I lost wifi, the latest info tells me that the video chip will be next.......... I've had to de-tune from 1.6GHz to 1.2 to keep it from over heating.... Perhaps you have heard the expression AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. If you want to see how bad it gets check out the HP DV6449us.

I'm in the market for a new laptop by spring for our trips up north but I haven't a clue as to what to buy brand wise. So far I have just over $500 in that fund and was thinking of a top price of $700 so that will limit what I can get. The stand I built for use in our van means 15" or less screen size, so I have some shopping to do. Now I guess I can scratch Acer off the list. That is too bad as they use to have good product, that is one of the brands I would buy for lab use in the good old days. We had maybe 20 -25 of them and never had a problem.

On the windows front both 8 and now 8.1 are working well and better/faster then 7, as for me and I actually like this new version. 2013 was my year of cleaning out my old stock from when I use to build computers and all the old computers I had sitting around, this included several unix machines. I still have unix boot media so I can boot over on any of my machines if I want or need to. I ended up take two van full of stuff to be recycled and still have a couple more boxes of stuff yet. Of course the empty space filled in almost immediately, self healing I think they call it.

It sounds like you are well in to the mending process and I hope that goes well in to the future.

I thought I would be spending a lot of hours on-line especially doing genealogy work both in the hospital and when I first got home. Silly me... The one thing that they failed to tell me and I had not read much about was just how brain damaged I would be when I woke up and for a good month after I got home. Any kind of detail work was a pipe dream. "Oh, yeah... that is normal, it will just take time..."  :o
Any who... The week I went in I bought myself a new laptop, HP this time, with... yep. Windows 8... Probably soon to be awarded the title of "the worst operating system of all time!" Looking back I would have probably been wiser to have waited anyway just to see if I lived or not. :)
Stupidly I decided to give Windows 8 a sporting chance. Egads they made a lot of pointless changes including nomenclature that just made for more confusion and accomplished nothing. After I was out of ICU my wife brought me my new laptop but I rarely used it at first. I didn't think that getting that angry was good for me. After Windows 8 crashed badly for the third time doing really simple stuff (and lost a batch of pictures, some of which I had not backed up yet) I pretty much just shoved the thing aside.
About the second day I was home, even in my fog, I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of Ubuntu Linux and have not looked back...
Now in all honesty this last release of Ubuntu (13.10) is a little too much more "Windows like" than I really like. I'm doing some looking around at other Linux distributions. I can't really blame Ubuntu. They are just trying to give people what they demand. It just isn't what I want. I do really love how I never have to mess with drivers etc. and how anything you plug in to it just works. What I don't like is this concept of mucking about in my computer and making too many decisions for me, like Windows does. That is also the direction that most on-line sites are going especially places like Facebook. The "KISS" system is going down for the third time all over the place. I want to scream "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" at them. Change what needs changing but quit changing stuff for no valid reason... Just making it "different" for the sake of "different" is not an improvement.

Now burning soap box. :D

A surface pro or pro 2 is in striking distance of your budget, and can do both tablet stuff and laptop stuff. With Windows 8.1 they run pretty well and have addressed a number of the concerns folks have. You might be able to save a bunch of cash and go for a surface or surface 2 depending on whether you do anything other than word/excel/email/web stuff.

All that stuff makes perfect sense with small 'mobile' devices but IMHO are a force fit for a reasonable sized human interface.

I consider a full sized keyboard with good human factors(tactile feedback that rocks) to be an 'iconic' design.(pun intended!)

P.S. any one know how to disable all the 'added features' that are activated by ctrl or alt + letters that causes departure from just plain old 'typing' input? A curse upon me for sure!:(
I suspect you could use a Stylus instead of your finger to touch the screen, which is what I use on my tablet.

Windows 8 and Shopsmith log in fixed

Post by fjimp »

Wow, once one reaches the webmaster the world is once again bright and sunny. I awoke this fine day with both email and a private message from the webmaster. While I walked the dog my bride made necessary changes. I can once again pollute this fine forum. My new laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15R. Although it has Win8 it has been set so I can use the desktop instead of the tiles for most things. The first week I found it horribly frustrating. The mouse moved around like a jack rabbit. After several days of use and several adjustments I am more comfortable and actually enjoying it.

As to potential surgery Dusty and perhaps a few others will remember I had a shoulder replacement on right side a year ago. The end of October I received a flue shot which was given in the wrong place. I immediately became very sore and weak on the left arm and shoulder which was almost unusable until after Christmas. The surgeon ordered an MRI and I see him Monday a wek from now. All indications are there is a tear in the left rotator cuff and likely it will be repaired. This situation made me feel i tryly needed to get back on the forum prior to any procedure. I apologize for my disgust with Dave and his demeanor. In the future I will either order online or ask for Jan or Linda if a man answers:rolleyes: Again thanks admin/webmaster and to each of my friends here who offered kind thoughts and guidance. Jim

Hey you guys!

Post by charlese »

How come there are so many greasy fingers. Both my shop and home have wash basins and nearby soap! Remember Lava soap?

I am not any type of computer geek! I don't even understand what you guys are talking about most of the time. All I know is I bought a Lenovo twist laptop because they were cheap (relatively) and it has windows 8. I thought it best that I get practiced using Win 8 because it is "The future". Other systems will phase out in few years.

I have no problems with Shopsmith sites and besides it is easier to find other things like Sports, Weather, TV schedules etc, etc.

For those who don't like to lean new things - I'm sorry!

Some of us who are not old enough to be dried up have natural oils in the tips of our fingers that make smudges. Those who use oily soaps have more right after 'washing'.:D BTW lava pumice will permanently scratch the screen! Maybe!

Not to be disagreeable. but what you described was following the pied piper. All those things 'easy to find', are only those things somebody else wants to make it easier.

Hopefully the spammers will also 'follow thee to the future'.] basic [/U]tool.

I deplore my own lack of understanding of all this newer 'user friendly' stuff(translation:make it so understanding is less needed).

I admit much has 'improved' over the last couple of decades, but not all has been a boon to those who do not like 'following blindly'.

As usual there is a 'leaning':D curve which I really do not like when the end result does not provide any new thingey that is useful to me.

And then there is the lack of 'need' for a 'desktop'/'laptop' computer to have a touch screen. Sure it works with idiot 'operating systems' that use pictures as menues. Makes sense with a phone that has no keyboard. The 'pad' 'computers' need that simplicity also and they do provide some useful functions. Just do not try to make them do any real 'work'.

Somewhere there is a useful plain in the future where these things will all come together. In the mean time tis a maze.

Old and dried up? You got it! But it makes screen touching/swiping a lot neater!

Following the Pied Piper? Maybe! But when the world goes that way It's best to follow. What was it Gandhi said? "There goes my people, I must follow".

Oh! to be left behind with outdated stuff! Some old guys like it that way!

I have been forced by business needs to attempt keeping up with changing technology (fortunately with retirement those days are over). My saving grace being both of our children have worked most of their adult lives designing testing and repairing the technologies of this modern world. Add to that being lucky enough to being married to a highly intelligent and patient woman. The first week I had this new confuser I hated it and wanted to keep my old one. The brides patience allowed me to reach a comfort level to adjust to the new machine. My do I like it. When turned on it loads in a matter of seconds rather than like a turtle drowning in the mud. Windows 8 is in fact a smaller highly fast tool. The monitor is in fact a huge jump ahead for my aging eyes. My confuser has intentionally been set up to allow me to use the prior windows desktop and features for most work. The real win win here is that the old laptop is one of the high end latitudes with a huge amount of RAM which enhances it for use with my wife's quilting machines and software. Her prior laptop is very old and had become a daily problem. Leave it to my bride to find a win win for both of us. Jimp
