quill not retracting

quill not retracting
I just posted a request for help on table and I noticed the quill will not retract back into the head. I looked on the table threaded rod and did not see the nut that needed tightening. The only thing I seen were the two, one on each side that looks like the posts stop it from turning. Any help would be appreciated. Don

Good luck. I can't imagine having a Shopsmith that I can't use. It must be a horrible experience. May you experience a most rapid recovery.

Hi;
Reminds me of my very recent experience with my machine.
After drilling about twenty holes the quill suddenly got very stiff. I took it apart and cleaned and rewaxed it and also found a VERY smal burr along the groove in the top of the quill. I removed the burr with a jewelers file and reassembled everything. It seemed good to go until the next day when it happened again. This time I took it all apart again and found that the two halves of the spring housing were binding.
One half of the housing is fixed to the pinion shaft and the other locks into the headstock casting with the set screw.
When the quill moved out from the headstock the two parts revolve around each other and cause the spring to develop more tension.
In my case there was a small metal shaving that was moving around and getting bound up between the two parts. I used some compressed air and a vacuum to remove any debris and now it works ok. (WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR ).
