Some thoughts

First.
Are you seeing a trend that is seasonal rather than just a slow down? I have two mark 5s slated for sale, but not until the weather gets more agreeable.

Second.
How are the economics in your area? Lots of the US is still in tough financial shape. Sellers may realize that if they wait for a while they may get a better price.

Third.
Presold. I have two complete systems, a 500 and a 510 that I'll sell next month and already have people who have given me contact info without putting anything on CL. I start talking about my Shopsmiths and poem ask me to call when I'm ready to sell. If one doesn't sell, then yes, I'll put something on there, but it could be that word of mouth in your area is sufficient to keep many ads from showing up.

None of what I have speculated may be accurate, but if I was to guess, I'd say that by May and or June, you'll see lots more ads.

Be well,
Ben

When I got it, it had a bandsaw, but it was not included with the SS I was selling...I kept it for my own use. :-)

My plan now is to set up the old SS and use it just for Band Saw and Drill Press use...
That sounds like a good idea. I once saw a picture where a guy had two SSs and had them bolted down such that he could turn long posts on them, one SS being the headstock, one being the tailstock. That seems really cool. I would like to be able to turn long porch posts, being into restoration carpentry.

Fewer Shopsmiths In The DC Area, Too

Post by algale »

I've been following the thread for a while and for what it's worth, here in the DC area I too have noticed that the number of listings on Craigslist including not just DC but also the Maryland and Virginia suburbs have dramatically slowed/decreased. I've been following Craigslist for Shopsmith stuff pretty closely since about March 2010 when I first began looking to acquire my first Shopsmith, so it can't just be the weather or seasonal.

What's up on Craigslist now is the stuff that's been listed and relisted for months -- mostly because it is hopelessly overpriced or basket cases (although there's a 10e for $100 that has been sorely tempting me). In the past, I'd see a new listing for a 510 or a 520 every week or two and there would be several new listings for older Shopsmiths every week. It isn't like it is all going up on ebay either as the listings nearest me have been pretty stagnant too.

Maybe we've done such a great job on this forum of extolling the virtues of these machines that we have caused the next generation of woodworkers to keep the machines that they are inheriting from dad/grandpa?

Since I got my shopsmith and accessorys by buying/selling craigslist,I watch pretty close in Chicago and there is only 2 or 3 of the same ones that get posted over nad over.

I got an email from a guy about one we talked about back in July, wanted 575 then. I set up a time and looked at it this week, still wanted 575, a clean but barebone mark v I offered 100 he said he would just keep it if he didnt get 500.

I think people are just keeping them, because it aint worth the hassle of dealing with all the craigslist people. And because, sadly, they have no resale value

Post by steve4447 »

I recently read somewhere that there over One Million Mark Vs out there...I'm happy that I was able to pick one up locally...I would have liked to find a 510 or 520 but I was glad to get a 500 in pretty good shape...I will only be the third owner and the original Bill of Sale was local and still with it....

it looks to me like it was never even used much...Mostly just dried up grease and oil...

Tempting deal

Post by BuckeyeDennis »

The Shopsmith action here in Columbus seems to be thawing a bit, along with the weather.

Here's a tempting deal that just popped up on Craigslist. It's a decent-looking Greenie with casters and jigsaw, plus a stand-alone lathe with chuck. The asking price for everything is $150 OBO.

Unfortunately, right now I need more equipment and projects about as much as I need a new hole in my head. Although that Greenie would probably be dandy for a Shorty ...

Does anyone know anything about the stand-alone lathe? I don't have a clue what it might be worth -- the ad just says that it needs a motor.

Wonder what is in de box?

Difficult to tell, but that might be a jig saw base to the right.

Methinks $150 is a steal.

Greenies typically do not look that good!

Well a look at the second pix reveals a little less 'pristine'. The third pic shows the rest of the jig saw.

And if I had any space in my workshop, I'd buy it too! But someone very wise (most likely on this site) once said: "The most important tool in in your shop is enough room to work".

As for me, I need either more wisdom, or more time to clear old stuff out!
