Lil help please

Post by thebear »

Recently bought my used Mark V and when I manually spin the saw blade it tends for spin back in the original location. What can I do to make it spin more normal?

Also, the quill worked well a few weeks ago, but today it tends to grind going in and out,

Thanks in advance

Hi Tom, What you are experiencing is a normal thing. You are seeing, and I supose feeling, the resistance of the stiff belts. If you run the saw for a while to warm up the belts, the backward movement should stop!

Hi Tom I have great memories of Mountain Home Arkansas, great area and friendly people.
Are the quill splines on the shaft are undamaged?
Maybe the bearing might be squealing for attention.

Relating to the grinding when moving the quill, I suspect that little set screw in the top of the headstock is a little too tight. Back it out 1/16 of a turn. Or perhaps your quill lock handle is a bit snug.

I'm still new to this stuff and maybe not good enough to advise but I just resently replaced my motor drive belt and after doing that I noticed the exact same thing as you are feeling on spinning the blade. Before replacing the belt my SS vibrated and the blade was easy to spin. Since I replaced the belt my SS is running very smooth and not vibrating like it used to. Another thing to try on the quill is to was it with some paste wax not automotive wax. Hope this helps other with more experience will chime in soon.
