progress on my Wine Glass Cabinet

Post by forrestb »

I showed this SketchUp 2D pic some time ago.

I have the cabinet frame and the door frame completed and ready for finishing. The hangers for the wine glasses were very time consuming, but I got them attached to the top today and put them in the cabinet for fit check - they did:D

My wife brought out some of her wine glasses and they, too, fit:)

PS like pauls, the SS was used for just about all the work so far. I have top molding to do and details to complete so I can get on with finishing.

Forrest, the carase is beautiful. Very nice work!

I will pass on a personal concern I have about the door. In your sketch, you show a door that fits on the outside of the case. The door is probably designed from 3/4" material and I see it protrudes further than the top molding. I'm pretty sure this can be fixed by making an inset door and making the molding protrude further to the front to overlap the door.

Sorry if I'm out of place here! Just trying to help.

I did consider an inset door - would have looked better - BUT, when I had to cut down the depth after a trial fit on the wall, I needed the space between the glass racks and the door to clear the glasses.

The wood is genuine mahogany with a BB back and top. Genuine mahogany I am told at Austin Hardwood in Santa Ana is getting scarce. 4/4 or 8/4 is all they have had lately.

In fact one of the stiles is a glue-up of 4/4 since 6/4 wasn't available. Don't ask why only one stile. :o

I will use Charles Neil's pre-color conditioner to try and minimize blotching, dye with a Lockwood Cuban Mahogany water-based dye (the wife's desired color since I used it on another piece) and finish with satin polyurethane.
